Lady Pioneers Split Season Opener

Lady Pioneers Split Season Opener

The Alfred State softball team opened up their 2013 campaign with a doubleheader split with Hagerstown (MD) CC.  The Hawks won the opener 10-8 while the Pioneers won the nightcap 6-5.

The opener was a back and forth affair with the Hawks scoring two in the bottom of the 6th inning to take the lead for good.  The Lady Pioneers had the tying runs on base with one out in the 7th but could not plate either run.  Alfred stranded 13 runners on base in the contest.

Katie Jackson (Troy, PA) led the offense with a 3 for 5 day while Aubri Mosier (Rome, PA) collected two hits and two RBI.  Brooke Gustin (Wellsville), Alyssa Roache (Sherman), and Kristen Potter (Harrison Valley, PA) all collected two hits.

In the nightcap, Alfred scored two runs in the 4th and 5th innings to grab a lead and held off a Hawk rally in the 7th to earn the victory.

Mosier and Gustin hit back to back homers in the 2nd inning and each finished 2 for 3 on the day.  Kassy Militello (Akron) had a clutch two RBI hit to give the blue & gold the lead.  Clarissa Swain (Dansville) struck out three on the mound and earned her first collegiate victory.

The Lady Pioneers and Lady Hawks continue their weekend series on Sunday with a Noon doubleheader.
