The Alfred State softball team lost two hard fought battles on day five of their trip to Ft. Myers, FL.  The blue & gold fell 8-3 to UMass Dartmouth and lost a 4-1 extra inning contest vs. Smith College.

Dartmouth led 4-0 after three innings before the Lady Pioneers scored two runs in the 4th to cut the lead in half.  Brooke Gustin (Wellsville) and Kristen Jackson (Keshequa) had RBI singles in the 4th for Alfred.  The Corsairs answered with three more to put the game out of reach in the bottom half of the inning.

In the nightcap vs. Smith, both teams scored early runs (Smith in the 1st, Alfred in the 2nd) but neither could get another run until the 8th inning.  In the 8th, Smith collected two RBI doubles and a RBI single to grab a 4-1 advantage.  Alfred went into order in the 8th to close the game.

Sormi Kruger (Medina) collected two (2 for 3) of the Lady Pioneers four singles in the game. Taylor McCarthy (Watkins Glen) allowed eight hits and three earned runs in eight innings but took the hard luck loss.

Edie Richardson led Smith with a 3 for 4, 1 RBI day while Gina Martucci struck out eight and allowed just one hit in four innings of relief work to earn the victory.
