Lady Pioneers Sweep, Win Pair of One Run Games

The Alfred State softball team swept a doubleheader at Penn College on Thursday as they returned to the diamond for the first time in nearly three weeks.  The Lady Pioneers (5-9) won the opener 3-2 and walked off with a 8-7 win in the nightcap.

In the opener, Ashlynn Nickerson (Friendship) fired a complete game three-hitter to earn the victory.  She allowed one earned run, walked four, and struck out nine.

Claire Hartman (Alden) collected a 2-RBI single in the 2nd inning and finished 2 for 4 on the day. Katie Jackson (Troy, PA) was 2 for 3 on the day and drove home a run on a bases loaded walk in the 5th.

In the nightcap, Aubri Mosier (Rome, PA) hit a walk-off one out single to give the Lady Pioneers, who were the home team in both games, the sweep.  Stormi Kruger (Medina) had tied the game up with a sac fly after the Wildcats scored a run in the 8th on a passed ball to grab the lead.

Mosier led the offense with a 3 for 4, 3 RBI day.  She connected on two RBI doubles earlier in the game prior to the game winning hit.  Kruger finished 2 for 3 with a RBI.

Nickerson picked up her second win of the day with two innings of relief work of Taylor McCarthy (Watkins Glen).  McCarthy allowed just one earned run in six innings of work.  Nickerson walked one and allowed just one unearned run.

The blue & gold welcome SUNY Canton to Alfred this weekend for a four-game series.  The Pioneers and Kangaroos begin the series on Saturday with a 1 p.m. doubleheader.
