Lady Pioneers Tripped Up In a Pair of One-Run Games

Alfred State and Nazareth battled in a pair of one-run contests on Thursday afternoon. The Flyers won a wild 11-10 affair in the opener and then completed the sweep with a walk-off 2-1 victory.

In a wild opener, the Pioneers jumped out to an early 6-1 lead after two innings. Stormi Kruger (Medina) had a two-RBI single in the 1st and Rebecca Hanrahan (Greene) keyed a four-run 2nd inning with a two-run homer.

Nazareth used a five run 3rd inning to tie the game and then grabbed the lead with two in the 4th and three in the 5th. The Pioneers fought back with a four run 6th inning keyed by a three-run homer by Kruger. The homer was the third of the season for Kruger.

The Lady Pioneers pushed a runner all the way to third base in the 7th but could not plate the tying run.

Kruger finished the opener 2 for 4 with 5 RBI while Claire Hartman (Alden) was 2 for 4 with 2 RBI.

Carly Pike was 3 for 3 while Morgan Ross was 3 for 4 for the Flyers. Nazaerth finished the contest with 17 hits but was slowed down by five errors.

In the nightcap, Nazareth grabbed a 1-0 lead in the 4th when Meghan Barry drew a bases loaded walk. Aubri Mosier (Rome, PA) tied it up with two outs in the 6th when she plated Kruger with a RBI double. With two outs in the 7th, Maureen Rogers delivered a walk-off double to lift the Flyers to the victory.

Kruger continued her hot hitting with a 2 for 3 day. Renee Stanford (Canisteo Greenwood) also collected two hits finishing 2 for 3. Taylor McCarthy (Watkins Glen) pitched 6.2 innings allowing nine hits and two runs.

Rogers was 2 for 4 including the game-winning hit while Jenna Donald was 2 for 2. Nicole White struck out eight and allowed six hits to earn the victory in the circle.

The blue & gold hit the road this weekend for a four-game series at SUNY Canton. The Pioneers and Kangaroos split a similar series last weekend in Alfred.
