Lady Pioneers Collect 27 Hits

The Alfred State softball team got the bats going but could not defend the big inning as they lost a pair on Sunday afternoon to SUNY Canton, 14-10 and 11-6.

In the opener, the Roos rallied for the victory. Alfred State led 5-1 after the 1st inning and 8-3 heading into the 5th. Canton scored four in the 5th to close within one and then took the lead with a seven-run 6th inning.

The blue & gold collected 15 hits in the contest. Stormi Kruger (Medina) was 3 for 3 while Aubri Mosier (Rome, PA) was 3 for 4 with 3 RBI. Trisha Shingleton (Byron Bergen) was 2 for 4 with a RBI, Alexis Bradshaw (Brighton) was 2 for 4, and Melissa Barber (Nassau/Catholic Central) was 2 for 5 with a RBI. Courtney McDaniel (Arkport) and Zoe Derr (Elmira Heights/Thomas Edison) both collected two RBI.

Courtney Hyland had a big game for the Roos finishing 4 for 5 with a RBI while Jaedyn Ossont and Kaleigh Foran both collected two hits and drove in three.

A seven-run 3rd inning gave Canton a 10-1 lead in the nightcap but the Pioneers chipped away but couldn't get any closer than 10-6 before falling 11-6.

Kruger was 2 for 3 while Bradshaw was 2 for 4 with 3 RBI. Jillian Kahn (Dansville) was 2 for 3 with a RBI, Mosier was 2 for 4 with 2 RBI, and Annie Corrao (Grand Island) was 2 for 4. Alfred State finished game two with 12 hits.

Hyland was 3 for 4 with 4 RBI in the nightcap while Rhea Coad drove in three runs for the Roos.

The Lady Pioneers wrap up the home portion of their schedule on Tuesday when they are scheduled to host a 3 p.m. doubleheader with Houghton.
