Lady Pioneers Wrap up Season

The Alfred State softball team collected 21 hits in a season ending doubleheader at Nazareth but the Flyers rallied in the 6th inning of both games to earn the sweep, 9-4 and 6-5.

In the opener, the Flyers led 3-0 heading into the 6th when the Pioneers mounted a comeback. Jillian Kahn (Dansville) drew a bases loaded walk, Melissa Barber (Nassau/Catholic Central) hit a RBI single, and Stormi Kruger (Medina) gave the blue & gold their first lead with a two-out 2-RBI single.

Naz answered right back in the bottom of the 6th to retake the lead. They collected six runs on six hits and were helped by three Pioneer errors.

Kruger was 3 for 4 with 2 RBI for the Pioneers while Stephanie Mongelli was 2 for 4 with 4 RBI for the Flyers.

Nazareth struck for three runs in the 1st inning to grab the early lead. Aubri Mosier (Rome, PA) hit a RBI double and Alexis Bradshaw (Brighton) made it a one-run game with a RBI in the 4th. After the Flyers got back a run in the bottom of the 4th, the Pioneers took the lead in the 5th. Kahn hit a RBI dboule to left center, Kruger followed with a RBI single to right, and Mosier gave the Pioneers lead with a RBI single to center.

In the bottom of the 6th, Nazareth rallied again. They collected two runs on two hits and benefited from two errors to grab the 6-5 lead. In the 7th, Kruger doubled with one out and Mosier followed with a single. Mosier stole second but Rachel Mertens stranded both runners to preserve the victory.

Mosier was 3 for 4 with 2 RBI while Kruger was 2 for 4 with a RBI. Kahn also finished 2 for 4 with a RBI. Mongelli was 2 for 3 for the Flyers while Mertens was 2 for 3 and earned the victory on the mound.

The game marked the end of the four-year careers of Kruger, Mosier and Trisha Shingleton (Byron Bergen).
