Softball Opens up Season

The Alfred State softball team opened up the 2018 season on Saturday at the Fastpitch Dreams Classic. Lesley University rallied for a 8-4 victory in the opener and the University of St. Joseph used a pair of big innings to earn a 14-1 victory.

In the opener, the Pioneers lit the scoreboard first with a pair of runs in the 1st inning. Jamie Parente (Mount Sinai) scored on a throwing error after a sac bunt by Morgan Franklin (Wellsville). Franklin scored on a RBI single by Ashley Peterson (Valley Central). The Lynx scored a single run in the 3rd and 4th to tie it before Franklin gave the Pioneers back the lead in the 5th when she connected on a two-RBI single down the right field line.

In the top of the 6th, Lesley rallied for five runs on six hits to grab their first lead of the game. In the bottom half of the inning, the Pioneers brought the tying run to the plate but could not plate a run. The Lynx added an insurance run and retired the blue & gold in order to earn the win.

St. Joseph scored in the 1st inning to grab the early lead but then put the game out of reach with eight runs in the 3rd and five more in the 4th inning. The Blue Jays collected 13 hits, including three extra base hits, in the contest. Alessandra Milardo allowed only two hits to earn the win. Zoe Derr (Elmira Heights/Thomas Edison) and Franklin collected triples and Peterson collected the lone RBI on a ground out in the 4th inning.

The blue & gold are back in action in Myrtle Beach, SC when they take on Sarah Lawrence at 9:30 a.m. and Albertus Magnus at 1:30 p.m.
