Softball Battles Allegheny

The Alfred State softball team got back on the field for the time in over a week at Allegheny College. The Gators put together a pair of big innings early to take the opener 17-3 and then won a pitcher's duel 2-0.

Allegheny scored nine in the 1st and seven more in the 2nd inning to take control of the opener. The Gators collected 10 hits and took advantage of seven walks. Jessica Valerino was 3 for with 3 RBI while Hayley Behr was 2 for 3 for 6 RBI.

The Pioneers scored all their runs in the 5th when Morgan Franklin (Wellsville) collected a 2-RBI double and scored on a error. Jordan Leonard (Lancaster) was 2 for 2 at the plate and tossed 2.1 innings of two hit relief.

Leonard and Baylee Tarnowski locked up in a pitcher's duel in the nightcap. The lone runs of the game came in the 3rd when Jessica Valerino delivered a one-out 2-RBI double to right center. The Pioneers collected five hits on the day but stranded six runners.

Tarnowski allowed just five singles while walking one and striking out four. Leonard allowed five hits, two runs, and struck out one. Jessica Zavolta was 2 for 3 to lead the Gators.

The Pioneers are back in action on Wednesday when they travel to Houghton for a 5 p.m. doubleheader.
