Pioneers Can't Solve Highlanders

The Alfred State softball team fell in a pair of contests at Houghton on Wednesday evening. The Highlanders earned 9-1 and 8-0 victories.

In the opener, Houghton jumped out to a 4-0 lead in the 1st. The game remained 4-0 until the Pioneers got on the board in the 5th when Betsy Butlak (Angola/Lake Shore) scored on a throwing error. The Highlanders answered with five runs of their own in the bottom half to earn the victory.

Kylie DeWilde (Midlakes) collected a double and finished 1 for 2 in the game. Tanya Hatton was 2 for 3 with 2 RBI and earned the victory on the mound.

Katie Jones hit a double, triple, and a homer as Houghton scored one in the 1st, four in the 3rd, and three in 5th to complete the sweep. Jones drove in two on the day along with teammates Caitlyn Cybart and Meghan Armstrong.

The Pioneers were held to just three singles by Morgan Franklin (Wellsville), Zoe Derr (Elmira/Thomas Edison) and Ashley Peterson (Maybrook/Valley Central) in the nightcap.

The Pioneers are back in action on Thursday when they travel to Elmira for a 3 p.m. doubleheader.
