Pioneers Shut Out Anna Maria, Split Day Three in Florida

The Alfred State softball team shutout Anna Maria 4-0 to open up day three of action at the Gene Cusic Classic. They finished the day splitting their doubleheader after falling 14-5 to Oneonta.

The Pioneers played well in all aspects of the game in the opener vs. Anna Maria as they put together timely hitting and solid pitching.

The blue & gold got it started right away in the first when Arianna Traugott (Elmira) doubled down the line. She came around to score on a RBI down the left field line by Krista Lovell (Addison). Danayah Diaz (Union Endicott) followed with a RBI single to make it 2-0.

Traugott singled to start another rally in the 5th. She came around to score on a RBI ground out by Lovell. Brittany Fisher (Indianapolis, IN) scored one batter later when Diaz singled to collect her third hit of the game. 

Traugott made it stand as she threw a complete game six hitter. She allowed just walk and struck out four to improve to 2-1 on the year.

Diaz finished 3 for 4 with a pair of RBI while Traugott was 2 for 4 with two runs scored.

In the nightcap, Oneonta built a 5-0 lead heading into the bottom of the 3rd. In the bottom of the 3rd, the Pioneers sent 10 batters to the plate and tied the game up. Traugott collected a RBI fielder's choice, Lovell hit a RBI single up the middle, Fisher drew a bases loaded walk, and Marissa Varela (Egg Harbor Twnshp, NJ) tied it up with a 2-RBI single to center.

The Red Dragons bounced right back and scored four of their own in the 4th and put the game out of reach with three more in the 5th and two in the 6th.

Sarah Boyce (Cortland), Angela Martone (Candor), and Lovell were each 2 for 3 on the day as the Pioneers collected seven hits in the contest.

The blue & gold head back to Naples, FL on Wednesday for another pair of games. They take on Elms College at 9 a.m. and RIT at 1 p.m.
