Softball Opened Season In Fort Myers

The Alfred State softball team opened their season in Fort Myers, Florida on Sunday.

The Pioneers battled in their first game against Skidmore College but fell 10-8. Brockport won the next game 11-0 in five innings.

Game one:

The Pioneers recorded 8 runs, 12 hits, 8 RBIs and 7 errors.

Skidmore recorded 10 runs, 11 hits, 9 RBIs and 0 errors.

Pioneer Leaders:

Kailey Wonica (Staten Island, NY/Moore Catholic) went 2-for-2 with one run and one RBI.

Nicole Youngberg (Falconer) went 3-for-4 with one RBI.

Kaylee Griffith (Niagara Falls) went 2-for-4 with three RBIs.

Abby Beidel (Newville, PA/Big Spring) went 2-for-4 with two RBIs.

Brianna Dittman (Brooklyn/James Madison) had three runs.

What Happened:

Sarah Boyce (Cortland) scored in the bottom of the third off a single from Griffith.

Both teams recorded five runs in the fifth inning.

Dittman scored off a single from Beidel. Faith Capito (Cuba, NY/Portville) scored off a double from Griffith who scored off a single from Wonica who was brought home off a single from Youngberg.

Skidmore scored one run in the top of the fifth, two in the sixth and one in the seventh.

Dittman scored the last two runs for the Pioneers. In in the bottom of the fifth she scored off a single from Faith Capito and in the bottom of the seventh off a single from Beidel.

Pioneer Pitching:

Brittany Fisher (Indianapolis, IN/Southport) pitched 7 innings and allowed 11 hits, 10 runs and struck out 1. 

Game two:

The Pioneers recorded 0 runs, 3 hits and 3 errors.

Brockport recorded 11 runs, 12 hits, 8 RBIs and 0 errors.

Pioneer Leaders:

Boyce and Lauryn Engle (Elba) went 1-for-1. Engle had a double.

Pioneer Pitching:

Abby Beidel Newville, PA/Big Spring) pitched 5 innings and allowed 12 hits, 11 runs, walked 2 and struck out 1. 

The Pioneers will play Wis.-Superior at 1 p.m. and Delhi at 3 p.m. in Fort Myers on Monday.
