Pioneers Rally to Beat Brockport in Extra Innings, Fall to Kenyon

The Alfred State softball team split on Wednesday afternoon in Fort Myers, Florida to move to 2-4 overall.

In their first game against Brockport (6-4), the Pioneers rallied to force extra innings and completed the comeback to win 11-10. In their second game they fell to Kenyon College (15-3) 11-0 in five innings.

Game one:

The Pioneers recorded 11 runs, 12 hits, 11 RBIs and 4 errors.

Brockport recorded 10 runs, 11 hits, 10 RBIs and 2 errors.

Pioneer Leaders:

Kaylee Griffith (Niagara Falls) went 3-for-4 with 4 RBIs and 4 runs including a home run.

Sarah Boyce (Cortland) went 4-for-5 with 4 runs and 1 RBI with two doubles.

Kailey Wonica (Staten Island, NY/Moore Catholic) went 3-for-4 with 3 RBIs and one run.

How it Happened:

The Pioneers took a two-run lead in the first after Boyce scored off a single from Griffith who scored off a sacrifice fly.

Brockport scored six unanswered runs for a 6-2 lead in the top of the fourth.

Alfred State started their rally in the bottom of the fifth.

Boyce doubled to left center to plate Gretchen Hendrickson (Canisteo Greenwood), Griffith singled to right field to bring home Boyce and Griffith scored off a ground out.

Brockport scored two more in the top of the sixth for an 8-5 advantage.

Boyce started the bottom of the seventh with a single up the middle and was brought home by an inside-the-park home run from Griffith.

With two outs and bases loaded Felecia Capito (Cuba, NY/Portville) stepped up to the plate and with patience and good judgment was walked to bring in Wonica for the tying run.

Brockport was able to score two runs in the top of the eighth.

With bases loaded Wonica hit a two-run single up the middle to plate Hendrickson and Boyce and tie the game 10-10.

With the game was on the line Nicole Youngberg (Falconer) stepped up to the plate and hit a walk off single up the middle to plate Griffith and complete the comeback.

Pioneer Pitching:

Brittany Fisher (Indianapolis, IN/Southport) (W, 2-1) pitched 8 innings and allowed 11 hits, 10 runs and struck out 1. She faced 38 batters, threw 98 pitches and 75 strikes.  

Game two:

The Pioneers recorded 1 hit and 3 errors.

Kenyon recorded 11 runs, 9 hits, 9 RBIs and 0 errors.

Pioneer Leaders:

Felecia Capito went 1-for-2 with a double.

How it Happened:

Kenyon scored seven runs in the first, three in the second and one in the fourth.

Pioneer Pitching:

Abby Beidel (Newville, PA/Big Spring) (0-3) pitched 4 innings and allowed 9 hits and 11 runs.

The Pioneers will play Me.-Presque Isle at 9 a.m. and Skidmore at 11 a.m. in Fort Myers on Thursday.
