Highlanders Defeat Pioneers
The Alfred State softball team (9-21) were swept by the Houghton College Highlanders (20-15) Thursday evening in Alfred. N.Y.
Game one: ASC 12, HC 8 (8 innings)
The Pioneers recorded 8 runs, 8 hits, 5 RBIs and 1 error.
The Highlanders recorded 12 runs, 20 hits, 12 RBIs and 3 errors.
Pioneer Leaders:
Kaylee Griffith (Niagara Falls) went 2-for-4 with 1 run.
Felecia Capito (Cuba, NY/Portville) went 2-for-3 with 2 runs.
Sarah Boyce (Cortland) had 2 RBIs.
Kailey Wonica (Staten Island, NY/Moore Catholic) and Brittany Fisher (Indianapolis, IN/Southport) each had 2 runs.
How it Happened:
In the bottom of the first inning Griffith scored off a single from Wonica who scored off a wild pitch.
Houghton scored three in the second.
In the bottom of the second Felecia Capito and Fisher scored off an error and Boyce scored off a single from Griffith.
The Highlanders scored one in the third.
In the fourth Felecia Capito scored off a sacrifice fly from Skylar Shaulis (Ovid, NY/South Seneca) and Fisher scored off a single from Boyce.
Houghton scored one in the fifth, sixth and seventh and five in the eighth.
Pioneer Pitching:
Fisher (L, 6-10) pitched 8 innings and allowed 20 hits, 12 runs, walked 3 and struck out 2. She faced 49 batters and threw 160 pitches, 108 were strikes.
Game two: ASC 6, HC 14
The Pioneers recorded 6 runs, 12 hits, 6 RBIs and 6 errors.
The Highlanders recorded 14 runs, 17 hits, 11 RBIs and 3 errors.
Pioneer Leaders:
Griffith went 2-for-3 with 1 run.
Felecia Capito went 2-for-3 with 1 run and 1 RBI.
Wonica had 2 RBIs
How it Happened:
Boyce scored in the first off a single from Wonica.
The Highlanders scored 10 runs in the third.
In the fourth Nicole Youngberg (Falconer) scored off a single from Lauryn Engle (Elba), Felecia Capito scored off a single from Shaulis and Engle scored off a single from Boyce.
In the fifth Wonica scored off a single from Felecia Capito and Griffith scored off an error in the sixth.
Houghton scored four runs in the seventh for the eight-run win.
Pioneer Pitching:
Abby Beidel (Newville, PA/Big Spring) (L, 3-11) pitched 7 innings and allowed 17 hits, 14 runs, walked 3 and struck out 2. She faced 42 batters and threw 148 pitches, 92 were strikes.
The Pioneers are home Saturday, April 30 to host Mt. Aloysius in a doubleheader starting at 2 p.m.
