Softball Splits on Last Day of Spring Break

The Alfred State Softball ended their week in Naples, FL in the Gene Cusic tournament on a 1-1 split. The Pioneers dropped a 9-2 loss to Lesley before winning an exciting 6-5 game over SUNY Delhi to wrap up the week.

In Game 1:

In Alfred State's game against Lesley, both teams started off slowly offensively with a 0-0 score going into the third. However, the Lynx quickly took advantage of several errors made on the Pioneer's end to go on a 8-0 run to end the third inning. Alfred State tried to fight back in the fourth, with Felicia Capito (Cuba, NY) hitting a single to advance Kaylee Wonica (Staten Island, NY) for their first score of the day. Capito continued to help the Pioneers by batting a double in the sixth inning to advance Nicole Youngberg (Falconer, NY) for their second and final score of the game. Audrey Farrell (Linwood, NY) threw 98 pitches in the game.

In Game 2:

Alfred State was quick to bounce back on the day after securing a win over SUNY Delhi in thrilling fashion. Both teams played great defense to start the game, keeping the score at 0-0 before the Pioneers quickly opened up scoring in the second. Jenna George (Dansville, NY) had a sacrifice fly to centerfield in order to bring Youngberg in for an RBI. Alyssa Chesher (Spencerport, NY) then singled an RBI for Lauryn Engle (Elba, NY) to score. Finally, Capito scored on an error to give the Pioneers a 3-0 lead going into the third inning. However, the Broncos responded right away with K. Beers scoring on a doubled RBI from L. Zecca. S. Cooper then scored on a Pioneer error, before Zecca scored for the second time in the inning off a single from R. Inglesias. Suny Delhi tied it up going into the bottom of the third, but the Pioneers made sure to take their lead back with a score from Faith Capito (Cuba, NY) off a Youngberg single. The teams fell silent again in the fourth inning before Alfred State brought two more home in the fifth with Sarah Boyce (Cortland, NY) scoring off a Wonica triple and Wonica scoring off a sacrifice fly from Youngberg. The Broncos fought back to bring in two more runs headed into the seventh inning, but the Pios capitalized on a scoreless inning to seal the game.

Youngberg had two hits and two RBI for Alfred State with Wonica and George also each having one hit and one RBI.

The Pioneers will return home to face Elmira College on Thursday, March 23rd at Elmira.
