Lady Pioneers Fall in Home Opener

The Alfred State women's basketball team couldn't overcome a halftime deficit and fell to Houghton 71-57 in their 2013-14 home opener.  The Lady Pioneers are now 1-2 on the year while the Lady Highlanders improve to 2-5.

Kristen Moose led Houghton with 25 points, eight rebounds, and six assists.  Maisie Pipher recorded a double-double with 14 points and 11 boards while Marie Martuscello came off the bench and finished with 11 points and 10 rebounds.

Marcedes Caver (Cleveland, OH) led the Lady Pioneers with her own double-double.  She led Alfred with 24 points and 10 rebounds.  Destiny Brito (Manhattan/Park West) finished with 12 points and seven rebounds.

Houghton jumped out to a 44-26 lead in the 1st half after shooting 48.6%.  They cooled off in the second half but the Lady Pioneers couldn't overcome the slow start.

The Pioneers shot 30.7% from the field while the Highlanders shot 36.1%.  Houghton held a 59 to 46 advantage on the boards.

Alfred State hits the road on Thursday with a 5:30 p.m. contest at Davis College.
