Big Run Leads Lady Pioneers to 15th Victory

The Alfred State women's basketball team used a 14-0 run to start the 2nd half to expand a two-point halftime lead en route to a 62-50 victory over Rochester (MI) College. The Lady Pioneers improve to 15-5 on the year and have won 10 of their 12 contests in 2015.

Haley Witchella (Oxford) led all scorers with 24 points and 16 rebounds. She scored 14 points and grabbed 11 rebounds in the 2nd half. Briana Meehan (Whitesville) finished with 13 points, Destiny Brito (Manhattan/Park West) finished with 10 points and nine boards, and Jennifer Fedrick (Buffalo/Bennett) had seven points, seven rebounds, and six assists.

The Lady Pioneers shot 42.3% from the field but struggle from the foul line making only 16 of 37 attempts.  Alfred State held a 56 to 43 advantage on the boards.

Sam Charney led the Lady Warriors with 14 points while Keearra Brown came off the bench and chipped in 11 points and nine boards. Rochester shot just 25% from the field but did connect on seven three-pointers.

The 1st half featured seven ties with the Lady Pioneers taking the 29-27 lead into the break. After starting the 2nd half on a 14-0 run, Alfred State led by as many 22, 56-34, before the Lady Warriors cut into the lead in the final eight minutes of the contest.

The Lady Pioneers, ranked #5 in the latest USCAA poll, battle Finlandia (MI) on Sunday at Rochester High School. Tip-off is slated for 2 p.m.
