Big 3rd Quarter Lifts Lady Pioneers

The Alfred State women's basketball team outscored Medaille 26-13 in the 3rd quarter as they defeated the Mavericks 73-59 in their 2016-17 home opener. The Lady Pioneers trailed 32-31 at halftime.

The Pioneers and Mavericks were tied at 15-15 after the 1st quarter and Kelli McCauley hit a three-pointer late in the 2nd quarter to give the visitors the one-point halftime lead. In the decisive 3rd quarter the Lady Pioneers hit 10 of their 17 shots and held Medaille to just 26.3% shooting. Medaille tried to cut into the lead but was unable to in the 4th.

Catherine Bialecki (Alfred Almond) had a monster game finishing with 23 points, 20 rebounds, and eight blocks. Breana Gleaton (Waldorf, MD) finished with 17 points and nine boards while Kelly Kane (Wellsville) chipped in 12 points. Joselyn Johnson (Geneva) added seven points while Minnie Robinson (Washington DC) added six points, six rebounds, and six assists.

The Lady Pioneers shot 45.2% from the field for the contest and hit 71.4% of their foul shots. They also held a 55 to 47 rebounding advantage.

Marceann Dunning led Medaille (1-3) with 17 points while Rayann Call finished with 15 points and eight boards. McCauley also finished in double figures with 10. Medaille shot just 26.3% from the field and was only 12 of 33 from the foul line.

The blue & gold are back in action next Tuesday when they head to Buffalo State for a 6 p.m. contest.
