Lady Pioneers Win Overtime Thriller

Joselyn Johnson (Geneva) hit a jumper with 11 seconds left in overtime to lift Alfred State to a 56-54 victory over Buffalo State on Tuesday evening. The Lady Pioneers have now won three straight and improve to 3-2 on the year.

Alfred State had a solid 1st half and led 24-17 at the break. The Bengals had a a strong 3rd quarter and gained a 30-29 advantage heading into the final stanza. Buffalo State gained a 10 points lead, 53-43 with 5:48 before the blue & gold mounted a comeback. Breana Gleaton (Waldorf, MD) capped the comeback and tied the game with 10 seconds left when she scored after grabbing an offensive board. The Bengals had a shot to win the game but it did not fall.

The Lady Pioneers scored the first nine points of the OT period only to have Buffalo State rally to score 10 of the next 11 points to tie the game at 54-54. After a Pioneer timeout with 24 seconds left, Johnson hit the game winning jumper. The Bengals were not able to capitalize on a jumper and two foul shots in the final seconds.

Catherine Bialecki (Alfred Almond) led the Lady Pioneers with 22 points and eight boards while Gleaton finished with 12 points and 11 boards. Minnie Robinson (Washington DC), Johnson, and Kimberly Levee (Dansville) all finished with six points. 

The Lady Pioneers were 25 for 71 from the field, 3 for 14 from three, and 3 for 12 from the foul line. The blue & gold held a 69 to 49 rebounding advantage in the contest.

Caleh McLean led Buffalo State with 23 points while Aaliyah Graham finished with 13. The Bengals were 17 for 76 from the field, 5 for 21 from three, and 15 for 21 from the foul line.

The Lady Pioneers are back in action next Tuesday when they travel to Davis College.
