Balanced Attack Leads Houghton Past Pioneers

Seven Highlanders scored six or more points as Houghton defeated Alfred State 71-47 on Friday evening. The Highlanders shot 43.3% for the game and were credited with 23 assists on their 26 baskets.

Houghton jumped out to a 15-5 lead after the 1st quarter and the Pioneers could dig out of that hole. The Pioneers and Highlanders both netted 19 points in the 2nd quarter. Houghton added to their lead in both the 3rd and 4th quarter to improve to 3-3 on the season.

Catherine Bialecki (Alfred Almond) led the blue & gold with 14 points and nine boards while Kelly Kane (Wellsvile) had 10 points. Michayla Salatel (Geneseo) and Rayanna Anderson (Wellsville) both finished with nine. The Pioneers shot 33.3% from the field, 31.8% from three, and 50% from the foul line. The team was also slowed down by 23 turnovers.

Cori Beck led the Highlanders with 11 points while Emily Swanson finished with 10 points and six boards. Madison Detwiler netted nine, Brittany Lenart had eight, Leslie Moose added seven, and Olivia Cox finished with six. Houghton was 26 for 60 from the floor, 5 for 13 from three, and 14 for 20 from the foul line. They also held a 42 to 32 advantage on the boards.

The Pioneers are right back in action on Sunday when they host Central Penn at 1 p.m.
