Pioneers Battle Tough vs. Carlow

The Alfred State women's basketball team closed out the 2017 portion of their season with a hard fought battle with Carlow. The Celtics held off all the Pioneer rally attempts to hold on for a 64-57 victory.

The Celtics led 16-15 after a back and forth 1st quarter. They led by as many as nine, 33-24, in the 2nd quarter before the Pioneers marched back into the game and cut the lead to 34-31 at half. Carlow led 52-43 at the end of three quarters and led 58-50 with just over four minutes remaining in the game. The Pioneers scored the next four points to cut the lead to four, 58-54, but could not get any closer. Carlow was 4 for 4 at the foul line in the final minute to ice the victory.

Catherine Bialecki (Alfred Almond) recorded a double-double with 17 points and 10 rebounds. Janae Gibson (Bronx/Pelham Prep) finished with nine points and nine rebounds, Kelsey Shaulis (South Seneca) finished with eight points and six rebounds, and Rayanna Anderson (Wellsville) had five points, 12 assists, and five rebounds.

Theresa Fachetti led the Celtics with 20 points while Emma Stille chipped in nine points and 17 boards. Ashlynn Jonczak came off the bench and finished with 13.

The Pioneers shot 35.8% (24 for 67) from the field, 17.6% (3 for 17) from three, and 85.7% (6 for 7) from the foul line while Carlow shot 33.8% (22 for 65) from the field, 31.3% (5 for 16) from three, and 71.4% (15 for 21) from the line. Alfred State held a 46 to 43 advantage on the boards. 

The blue & gold are back in action on Thursday, January 4th when they travel to D'Youville for a 6 p.m. tip-off.
