Team Effort Lifts Pioneers to Third Straight Victory

Three Pioneers finished in double figures and the blue & gold held a 64 to 44 advantage on the boards as Alfred State defeated SUNY Delhi 68-62 on Sunday afternoon. The Pioneers have now won three straight and four of their last five.

Alfred State jumped out to a 10-2 lead in the first four minutes of the game before Delhi rallied to score the next ten. Rayanna Anderson (Wellsville) connected on a three with a minute left in the quarter and the Pioneers never trailed again. The three started a 13-0 run and put the blue & gold in control. Alfred State led 34-23 at half and 46-39 at the end of three. Delhi got within five points, 67-62, in the final seconds of the game but couldn't get any closer.

Catherine Bialecki (Alfred Almond) and Janae Gibson (Bronx/Pelham Prep) both recorded double-doubles. Bialecki has 21 points, 18 rebounds, and six blocks while Gibson had 14 points and 14 rebounds. Anderson connected on three 3-pointers and finished wtih 17 points and eight assists. Kelsey Shaulis (South Seneca) chipped in nine while Michayla Salatel (Geneseo) had five points and eight assists. 

Alfred State (6-8) shot 40.6% (28 for 69) from the field, 27.3% from three, and 52.9% from the foul line. They held a 42 to 22 advantage on the defensive boards (both teams had 22 offensive boards in the contest).

Camryn McDonald led Delhi with 22 points (10 for 14 from the foul line) and nine boards while Samiaya Salley finished with 17 points. Katie Herba recorded a double-double with 10 points and 10 rebounds.

The Broncos (12-8) shot 27.5% for the game, 14.3% from three, and 59.3% from the foul line.

Alfred State is on the road on Wednesday when they battle Pitt-Bradford. Opening tip-off is slated for 7 p.m.
