Seven Pioneers scored at least six points as the Alfred State women's basketball team opened up the 2018-19 season. Bluefield State jumped out to a 1st half lead and didn't let the blue & gold rally as they earned a 81-52 victory in day one of the USCAA Classic at Penn State Fayette.
Alfred State trailed 16-13 after the 1st quarter but the Big Blues pushed their lead to double-digits in the 2nd quarter and led 40-27 at halftime. In the 3rd, the Pioneers cut the lead to seven, 48-41 late in the quarter but they could not get any closer. BSC outscored ASC 31 to 9 in the 4th to seal the victory.
Emily Kelley (Wellsville) had nine points and 10 boards to lead the way in her collegiate debut. Kesley Shaulis (Ovid/South Seneca) also scored nine points while Janae Gibson (Bronx/Pelham Prep) added seven points and seven rebounds. Rayanna Anderson (Wellsville) and Skylar Shaulis (Ovid/South Seneca) both finished with seven while AP Acosta (Bronx/Evander Childs) and Emily Benes (Buffalo/Mount Mercy) both had six.
The Pioneers shot 28.6% from the field and only 50% (12 for 24) from the foul line.
Kara Sandy led Bluefield State with 15 points while Lyndsay Hatfield and Jemiah Brittnum both finished with nine. The Big Blues shot 39.1% from the field, 67.9% (19 for 28) from the foul line, and held a 46 to 39 advantage on the boards.
The Pioneers are right back on the court tomorrow afternoon when they play Penn State Greater Allegheny in day two of the USCAA Classic.
