Big 4th Quarter Lifts Pioneers Past Greater Allegheny

The Alfred State women's basketball team used a big 4th quarter as they earned their first victory of the 2018-19 season, 65-53 over Penn State Greater Allegheny on day two of the USCAA tip-off classic. The Pioneers and Lions entered the 4th quarter tied at 41-41.

Emily Benes (Buffalo/Mercy) gave the Pioneers a lead early in the 4th and Skylar Shaulis (Ovid/South Seneca) connected on two straight three-pointers to give the Pioneers a 49-41 lead with 7:38 remaining. The Lions were unable to get closer than seven the rest of the way. The Pioneers ended up outscoring PSGA 22-11 in the final stanza.

Penn State led 17-16 after the 1st quarter and 33-26 at the half. The Pioneers tied the game up at 41 with a strong 3rd quarter. The game featured only three ties and one lead change.

Emily Kelley (Wellsville) led the team with 15 points and 14 rebounds while Janae Gibson (Bronx/Pelham Prep) had a monster double-double finishing with 14 points and 20 boards. Skylar Shaulis came off the bench and finished with 14 including hitting the only two three-pointers on the day for the blue & gold. Kelsey Shaulis (Ovid/South Seneca) and Benes both chipped in eight points.

The Pioneers shot 37.7% from the field and was 15 for 28 from the foul line. On the glass, Alfred State held a 47 to 34 advantage including grabbing 19 offensive boards.

Tearia Hartley led the Lions (1-3) with 18 while Tina Clybourn finished with 17 and Jayla Ellis had 10.

The blue & gold open up the home portion of their schecdule on Tuesday when they host Wells College. Opening tip-off is at 5:30 p.m.
