3rd Quarter Run Helps Pioneers Past Oswego

The Alfred State women's basketball team used a 13-0 run in the 3rd quarter as they rallied to defeat Oswego 70-64 on Saturday. The Pioneers have now won three straight and improve to 3-1 on the year.

Oswego led 16-11 after the 1st and 31-29 at the half. They built their lead to 43-35 with just over five minutes before the Pioneers went on their big run to grab the lead, 48-43, heading into the final ten minutes. Early in the 4th the game was tied three times before the Pioneers scored six straight to make it 58-52 with 6:07 remaining. Alfred State led by at least four the rest of the way as they sealed the victory.

Rayanna Anderson (Wellsville) had a big day with 21 points. She was 3 for 8 from beyond the arc and was 6 for 8 from the foul line. Emily Kelley (Wellsville) had a double-double with 16 points and 10 boards while Emily Benes (Buffalo/Mount Mercy) came off the bench and had eight points, 11 rebounds, and three steals. Kelsey Shaulis (Ovid/South Seneca) had eight points, Janae Gibson (Bronx/Pelham Prep) had seven points and nine rebounds, and Skylar Shaulis (Ovid/South Seneca) had seven points.

The Pioneers shot 35.7% from the field, hit five of 14 three-point attempts, and connected on 15 of 20 foul shots. They held a 47 to 41 advantage on the boards including 20 on the offensive glass.

Samantha Britton led the Lakers (1-1) with 16 points while Raiven Encarnacion had 12, Ramatoulaye Sy chipped in 11, and Rachael Winhausen had 10 points and nine rebounds. Oswego shot 35.4% from the field, was 3 of 13 from three, and hit 15 of 18 foul shots.

The Pioneers head to Houghton College on Tuesday for a 5:30 p.m. contest with the Highlanders.
