Big 2nd Quarter Lifts Green Mountain

Green Mountain connected on seven 3-pointers in the 2nd quarter and used that momentum en route to a 78-66 victory over Alfred State on Friday night. The Pioneers trailed by as many as 29 in the 3rd quarter but surged back with a strong 4th quarter.

A late basket to end the 1st quarter gave Green Mountain the 15-14 lead after ten minutes. In the decisive 2nd quarter, the Eagles went on a 14-0 run shot 77.8% (7 for 9) from three to grab a 48-28 lead at the half. They added to their lead in the 3rd but the Pioneers used a 10-0 run in the 4th and cut the lead down to 12 but ran out of time in their comeback attempt.

Rayanna Anderson (Wellsville) had another solid all-around effort. She finished with 17 points, nine assists, and seven boards. Kelsey Shaulis (Ovid/South Seneca) added 15, Jordyn Pettit (Wellsville) had 11 points and nine boards, and Emily Kelley (Andover) chipped in nine points. Skylar Shaulis (Ovid/South Seneca) came off the bench and had eight points and 10 rebounds.

Alfred State shot 37.7% (26 for 69) for the game, 29.6% (8 for 27) from three, and hit 6 of 9 foul shot opportunities.

Mercedes Rideout connected on six 3-pointers and led the Eagles (7-17) with 22 points and nine boards. Sharena Armstrong added 18 points and nine rebounds, Taylor Hill had 15, and Riley Lane finished with 11. Green Mountain shot 43.3% (29 for 67) from the field, 48% (12 for 25) from three, and 72.7% (8 for 11) from the foul line.

The Pioneers wrap up the regular season on Sunday with a road contest at Pine Manor College. Opening tip-off in Chestnut Hill, MA is at Noon.
