Quick Start Not Enough as Houghton Rallies

The Alfred State women's basketball team started fast but Houghton put together a solid 2nd half and earned a 67-51 victory over the Pioneers on Tuesday evening.

The Pioneers raced out to a 17-3 lead in the first 6:30 of the game but Houghton started to chip away. Alfred State led 19-11 after the 1st quarter and 31-25 at half. The Highlanders came out firing in the 2nd half and the Pioneers went cold. Houghton shot 55% and Alfred State shot 20%. After three quarters, the blue & gold led 43-42 but Houghton held a 25-8 advantage in the 4th to take the victory.

Jordyn Pettit (Wellsville) led the Pioneers with 13 points and nine boards while Sylar Shaulis (Ovid/South Seneca) finished with 12. Rayanna Anderson (Wellsville) and Kelsey Shaulis (Ovid/South Seneca) each chipped in nine.

Emie Taylor finished with a double double, 13 points and 11 boards to lead Houghton (1-4). Brooke Lewandowski finished with 13, Caitlyn Cybart had 12, Hannah Cybart had 11, and Cori Beck added 10.  

The Pioneers play their first ever AMCC game on Saturday when they travel to Penn State Behrend for a 4 p.m. start.
