Pioneers Win One at Wilkes Quad

The Alfred State wrestling team went 1-2 at the Wilkes Quad on Sunday afternoon. The Pioneers defeated West Virginia Tech 24-21, fell 38-9 to the hosts, and lost 28-15 to Oneonta.

In their opener, the Pioneers fell to #18 ranked Wilkes. The Colonels took the six matches of the day to take control of the match. Alfred State's George VanValen (Ithaca) earned a pin in 4:32 in the 174 lb. match to get the Pioneers on the board while Riley Andrews (York) won 10-0 in the heavyweight bout. 

Versus the WV Tech, the Pioneers took the first three matches to take 12-0 lead. Michael Boyle (Cooperstown) earned a forfeit at 125, Ryan Thierman (Portville) won a 3-2 decision at 133, and Austin Parker (Port Byron) won 10-8.

After a an injury default at 149 and a forfeit at 157 tied it, Konnor Kremer (Horseheads) earned a 2-0 victory at 165. WV Tech took the match at 174 to tie it at 15-15 before the teams traded forfeits at 184 and 197 to knot it up heading into the heavyweight match. Andrews earned his second victory, 3-1 to clinch the Pioneer victory.

Three forfeits cost the Pioneers vs. Oneonta. Thierman earned a 6-4 victory at 125, Parker got a forfeit victory at 141, VanValen won 6-4 at 174, and Brad Haggerty (Wellsville) won 5-2 at 184

The Pioneers wrestle their final dual match of the season on Wednesday when they host Oswego at 7 p.m.
