Van Valen Undefeated at John Carroll Duals

George Van Valen (Ithaca) went 3-0 as the Alfred State competed at the John Carroll Duals on Sunday. The Pioneers finished 1-2 on the day with a 25-20 victory over Lourdes before falling 37-11 to Otterbein and 30-22 to the hosts.

In the victory over Lourdes the Pioneers won the first three matches.  Patrick Lehman (Cincinnatus/Marathon) won 4-3 victory at 125, Jeffrey Gress (Lydonville) won 12-5 at 133, and Casey Connor (Barnstable, MA) won 12-3 to give the Pioneers the early 10-0 lead. Lourdes won the next two matches before Devin Horton (Appalachian/Owego Free) earned a 7-3 decision at 165. After a forfeit the blue & gold rallied behind a pin by Van Valen in 1:42 at 184 and a pin by Brandyn Whitacre (Jamestown) in 2:04 at 197 to seal the victory.

Otterbein won eight of the ten matches in the Pioneers second dual of the day. Van Valen earned a 16-0 victory at 184 and Connor earned a forfeit victory at 141.

Versus John Carroll fell behind early and couldn't rebound all the way back. Gress was the lone winner via forfeit in the first seven matches as the Blue Streaks built a 30-3 lead. Van Valen earned a 15-2 victory at 184, Whitacre earned a pin at 3:42 at 197, and Kyle Fitzgerald (Turin/South Lewis) picked up a pin in 54 seconds at heavyweight.

The Pioneers are back in action on December 1st when they take on Jamestown CC and Muskegon CC before competing in the Niagara Open on the 2nd.
