Mattison Wins Title as Pioneers Open up Campaign

Ryan Mattison (Brockport) won the heavyweight title as the Alfred State wrestling team opened up the season at the Brockport Open.

Mattison was 4-0 on the day as he won his first individual title of the season. He opened up the day with a pin of Jacob Smith (Jamestown CC) in 1:13. He then defeated teammate Kyle Fitzgerald, who finished 5th in the weight class, to advance to the semifinals. In the semis he won 12-3 over Calik Kennedy (Brockport) before pinning Nick Jones (Jamestown CC) in the finals. Mitchell Lattuca (Lancaster) finished 4th in the same weight class finishing the day 2-2. Fitzgerald was also 2-2 on the day and finished 5th.

Tristan Almeter (Elma/Iroquois) was 3rd at 184 lbs. He pinned Tylor Allard in his quarterfinal match then fell in the semifinals before rebounding with a pin of Rey Robinson and a 6-4 decision over Rich Conte (Brockport).

Mike Galton (Warsaw) also earned a 3rd place finish. Galton lost in his first match but rebounded with four straight victories in the 157 lb. weight class. He defeated his teammate Devin Horton 11-6, Noah Weisburg (Buffalo Wrestling Club) 16-6, Jordan Kayes (Brockport) 9-3, and Nathan Elliott 12-3 to finish the day 4-1.

Yameek Kendrick (Lisle/Whitney Point) was 4th at 141 after a 3-2 day while Jesse Pitoni (Churchville Chili) was 2-2 and finished 5th at 125 lbs.

The Pioneers hit the mats again next Saturday at the Gettysburg Invitational.
