Pioneers Finish 10th at John Summa Tournament

The Alfred State wrestling team finished 10th at annual John Summa Tournament hosted by Baldwin Wallace. Three Pioneers advanced to the consolation semifinals.

Kyle Fitzgerald (Turin/South Lewis) was 4-2 in the heavyweight bracket. After falling in his opening match he rebounded with four straight victories. He won 8-1 over Nathan Scott (Ohio Wesleyan), defeated Boaz Smart (Brockport) 15-3, pinned James Kimbrough (Thiel) in 3:00 and pinned Tyler Brooks (Thiel) in 2:16. His day ended in the consolation semifinals.

In his debut on the team Owen Kissell was 3-2 in the 149 lb. weight class. After falling in his first match, Kissel rebounded with three straight pins. He pinned Cody Roland (Thomas More) in 2:21, Maxwell Bourque (Baldwin Wallace) in 55 seconds, and Liam Collins (Washington & Jefferson) in 1:52. His day ended in the consolation semifinals.

Mike Galton finished 3-2 on the day at 157. He defeated Rhett Roeder (Ohio Northern) 12-4 and then won a 3-2 decision over Kody Wagner (Wabash) to advance to the quarterfinals. He fell in the quarters but bounced back with a 11-2 win over Dylan Dolph (Ohio Northern). His day ended in the consolation semifinals.

Ryan Mattison (Brockport) was 3-2 with three pins at heavyweight. He pinned Jacob Obst (Wabash) in 51 seconds, Tyler Kassinger (Thomas More) in 2:55, and Mitch Lattuca in 2:37. Mitchell Lattuca (Lancaster) also won a pair of matches in the heavyweight bracket.  He won 9-0 over Devan VanVliet (Thiel) and pinned Connor McCubbin (Thomas More).

The Pioneers scored 33.5 points in the event that featured 15 teams. Wheeling Jesuit took the team title with 213 points.

The blue & gold are back in action next Sunday at the RIT Duals.
