Ilges and Galton Finish Fourth at RIT Invitational

Blake Ilges (Canisteo Greenwood) and Mike Galton (Warsaw) led the Alfred State wrestling team with fourth-place finishes as the Pioneers finished 10th out of 16 teams with 50.5 points at the RIT Invitational on Saturday.

Ilges scored 12 points in the 197 lb. bracket. He started the day with a win by a tech fall over Michel St Juste (Norwich) then earned a 17-14 decision over Jake Edwards (Wesleyan (CT)) and went on to win by a 18-12 decision over Jackson Crawn (Delaware Valley). In the semifinal he lost a 5-2 decision to Jhordyn Innocent (Oneonta State) then went on to win the consolation semifinal 10-6 over Isaiah Johnson (Delaware Valley) (Dec 10-6) but lost the third-place match with a 5-3 decision to Anthony Cascen (Oswego State).

Galton scored 10.5 points in the 174 lb. bracket. He had a bye in round one, won round two with a 6-1 decision over Caiden Rodgers (John Carroll) then went on to win in sudden victory in the quarterfinal over Zach Stedeford (RIT) (SV-1 3-1). He lost in the semifinal to Charlie Grygas (Oswego State) with a 3-2 decision and came back to win the consolation semifinal 5-2 over Ben Dougherty but lost the third-place match in a 6-1 decision to Daniel Devera (John Carroll).

Jaden Hansen (Newburgh Free) went 5-1 on the day to finish sixth in the 125 lb. bracket and scored eight points. He started off with an 8-4 decision over John Freebern (RIT), lost by a fall to Ryan Kelly (Delaware Valley) (4:07) and came back to win his last four. He won a 13-3 major decision over Merlin Senat (Delaware Valley), won then next with an 11-5 decision over Aiden Prunoske (RIT) then a 4-0 decision over Ryan Berstler (Pennsylvania College of Technology) and a 6-2 decision over Eddie Wallace (John Carroll).

Justin Smith (Marcus Whitman) and Ryan Nugent (Newfane) both went 3-2 in the 157 lb. bracket for 6.5 points, Troy Hayes (Windsor) went 3-2 in the 125 lb. bracket for six points and Sean Malenfant (Averill Park) went 3-2 in the 165 lb. bracket for six points.

The Pioneers are back in action on Saturday, Dec. 11 when they host Lycoming at noon and Ulster at 1:30 p.m.
