Pioneers Win in Double OT

Maggie Meyer scored with 2:18 remaining in the 2nd overtime as Alfred State defeated Medaille 3-2 on Thursday afternoon. The Pioneers are now 1-1-1 on the year while the Mavericks are 0-2.

Michayla Salatel (Geneseo) got the Pioneers on the board in the 12th minute. The goal was Salatel's 28th of her career. The game remained 1-0 until late in the 1st half when Kristen Kline scored with just under two minutes left after getting a pass from Marissa Campbell. 1:11 later Carissa Pompa (Rochester/Mercy) gave the blue & gold back their lead after getting a pass from Abby King (Holland). Both teams registered seven shots in the opening half.

Kline tied the game up 3:46 into the 2nd half when she capitalized on a penalty shot. Neither team could find the back of the next the rest of the half and the game went to extra time. Medaille held a 7 to 3 shot advantage in the 2nd frame.

Both teams collected one shot in the 1st overtime but neither could break the tie. Meyer ended the game 7:42 into the 2nd OT when she scored her 2nd of the season after getting a pass from Mackenzie Congdon (Hornell). Alfred State held a 2-0 advantage in shots in the 2nd OT.

Madison Papaj (Holley) made five saves in nearly 108 minutes of action to earn her first collegiate vicory in net. Melyssa Olmstead made eight saves for the Mavericks.

Medaille finished the contest with a 15-13 shot advantage but only seven of those shots were on net.

The Pioneers return home on Saturday for a 2 p.m. contest vs. Morrisville.
