Pioneers Advance to ACAA Finals with Victory over Delhi

The Alfred State women's soccer team scored a pair of 1st half goals and defeated SUNY Delhi 2-1 in the semifinals of the 2018 American Collegiate Athletic Association (ACAA) semifinals held at Finlandia University (Hancock, MI). The Pioneers will look to defend their crown tomorrow when they take on Thomas More (KY) at 11 a.m.

Maggie Meyer (Red Creek) got the Pioneers on the board 27:55 into the contest after getting a pass from Melissa Mineti (Livonia). Mineti was able to slide a pass from the side of the net to the front that found Meyer's foot. The goal was Meyer's 8th of the season. 

Mineti doubled the lead with just under five minutes left in the 1st half when she was able to race down the right side on a breakaway and fire a shot past the goalkeeper for her 5th of the season.

Alfred State and Delhi both collected 10 shots in the 1st half. Madison Papaj (Holley) made five saves to keep the Broncos off the board.

The Broncos cut the lead to 2-1 in the 52nd minute when they capitalized on a corner kick opportunity. Sydney Tuysuzian's corner found Kelsey Innes who got Delhi on the board.

Delhi held a 8 to 5 shot advantage in the 2nd but could not get the equalizer. Papaj made five big saves in the 2nd and finished with 10 total saves. Delhi finished with eight corner kick opportunities with five of those chances coming in the 2nd half. 

The Pioneers head into the ACAA Championship match vs. Thomas More with a 12-3-2 overall record. Thomas More, the #1 seed in the tournament, defeated the hosts Finlandia 2-0 in the other semifinal contest.
