Pioneers Battle to a Scoreless Draw in ACAA Championship Match

Alfred State and Thomas More (KY) battled for 110 minutes without either team finding the back of the net in the ACAA Championship match at Finlandia University (MI) on Sunday afternoon. The contest was played in rain, snow, and wind and the ACAA champion was determined by penalty kicks. The Saints edged the Pioneers 5-4 in PK's to claim the 2018 ACAA title.

The Saints held a 33 to 7 shot advantage in in the game and a 15 to 4 advantage on shots on goal.

Madison Papaj (Holley) anchored the defensive backline and made 15 saves to record her 8th shutout of the season. Thomas More's Maddy Kim made four saves for the Saints.

Papaj, Maggie Meyer (Red Creek), and Melissa Mineti (Livonia) were named to the All ACAA Tournament team for their solid play over the weekend.

Alfred State entered the tournament as the #2 seed and defeated #3 SUNY Delhi 2-1 to advance to their second straight ACAA Championship match. The Pioneers won the 2017 title over SUNY Canton.

The Pioneers finish the 2018 season with a 12-3-3 record. The twelve wins are the most since the 2013 season and ties the most for a team during the six years of NCAA Division III play. Alfred State has played in some sort of postseason tournament in all six years of play in the NCAA.
