Maggie Meyer and her teammates celebrate the teams first goal of the season.

Pioneers Tie Delhi in Season Opener

The Alfred State women's soccer team battled to a 2-2 tie with SUNY Delhi on Friday evening to open up their 2019 campaign.

Maggie Meyer (Red Creek) got Alfred State on the board in the 14th minute when she was able to find the back of the net after getting a long pass from Morgan Plymel (Jamestown/Maple Grove). The goal was the lone tally of the first half. Delhi held a slight 6-5 shot advantage in the first 45 minutes.

The Pioneers made it 2-0 just under eight minutes into the 2nd half when they executed a perfect corner kick. Riley Mucher (Warsaw) sent a corner kick to the center of the box and Angela Martone (Candor) was able to put her head on it and send it into the back of the net.

Just over three minutes later, Delhi cut the lead in half when they capitalized on their own corner kick opportunity. A'mya Joseph scored after the corner kick by Sydney Tuysuzian. The Broncos scored with just 4:59 remaining in regulation when Alexa DuBois slide a shot in after getting a pass from Micayla Slattery. Alfred State held a 8-6 shot advantage in the 2nd half.

In extra time both teams took the ball deep in their opponents zone but did not get many shots off. The best opportunity in OT came when Delhi sent a corner kick into the box but Laura Mecca (Hamburg) was able to get the save and keep the ball from rolling across the goal line.

Mecca finished her first career game in net with six saves while the combination of Rachel Scoone (2) and Jessica Shultis (4) made six saves for Delhi.

The blue & gold are back in action next Saturday when they travel to Morrisville for a 2 p.m. start.
