Pioneers Split Pair of Home Matches

The Alfred State volleyball team split a pair of matches on Saturday evening. The Pioneers fell 25-20, 25-11, 25-14 to Penn State Behrend but bounced back to defeat Cazenovia 25- 15, 25-10, 25-9.

Alfred State started off fast vs. Behrend but the Lions were able to recover and controlled the match the rest of the way. Bryanna Godfrey (Tioga) led the team with 10 kills while Kiara Perkins (Coudersport, PA) chipped in six kills. Sarah Raichlin (Binghamton/Chenango Valley) passed out 13 assists while Madison Webster (Corning) led the way with 12 digs. The Pioneers struggled with only a .012 hitting percentage.

Amanda Henry led Behrend with 14 kills, Hannah Saunders passed out 28 assists, and Madison Clapper led the way with 14 digs.

Versus Cazenovia, the Pioneers put together long strings of points in each of the three sets to roll to the victory. Godfrey once again led the way with nine kills while Perkins and Morgan Hungerford (Lyndonville) each registered eight each. Hungerford had a sizzling .667 hitting percentage. Samantha Tumolo (Manorville/Eastport South Manor) passed out 15 assists and Webster had a team high 11 digs. The blue & gold hit .314 in the nightcap and served 10 aces.

Mary MacHugh had four kills and nine digs while Grace Torino passed out seven assists for Cazenovia.

The Pioneers wrap up their play this weekend when they battle Lyndon State at 11 a.m. Lyndon State fell to Cazenovia and Penn State Behrend (3-0) on Saturday night.
