Volleyball Competes in Buffalo

The Alfred State volleyball team fell in a pair of matches on Saturday afternoon at D'Youville. The Pioneers lost a tight match 3-1 to the hosts and then fell 3-0 to Baldwin Wallace.

The Spartans took the opening set 25-15 before the Pioneers bounced back for a 25-22 victory to even the match. The blue & gold struggled in set three and fell 25-16 but held a 18-13 lead in the 4th set before D'Youville rallied all the way back to take the game 26-24.

Bryanna Godfrey (Tioga) recorded 12 kills and 20 digs to lead the way for the Pioneers. Kiara Perkins (Coudersport, PA) tallied 12 kills and 14 digs, Samantha Tumolo (Manorville/Eastport South Manor) passed out 22 assists and Morgan Hungerford (Lyondonville) chipped in seven kills and three blocks. The Pioneers were slowed down by 12 service errors.

Kendyl Smith led the Spartans with 11 kills, Abby Booth passed out 19 assists, and Alexandra Bubar led the way with 17 digs. Booth also recorded six of the team's 17 service aces.

Baldwin Wallace improved to 23-0 on the season with a 25-11, 25-6, 25-10 victory over the Pioneers.

Perkins and Hungerford both had five kills, Tumolo passed out 10 assists, and Valerie Intini (Rochester/Eastridge) collected six digs. Ellen Hawkins led the offensive attack with seven kills for the Yellowjackets. Kathleen Egan set up the offense with 16 assists while Alicia Lortcher led the back line with six digs.

The blue & gold are back in action next Friday evening at the Lycoming Tournament. The battle Lycoming (4 p.m.) and Misercordia (6 p.m.) on Friday and SUNY Canton (10 a.m.) and Penn State Behrend (2 p.m.) on Saturday.
