Strong Team Effort in Victory over Bengals

The Alfred State volleyball team opened up the home portion with a strong team effort as they rallied for a 17-25, 25-16, 25-17, 25-20 victory over Maine Fort Kent. The Lady Spikers are now 2-0 while the Bengals are 3-2.

Fort Kent started out fast and connected on nine kills in the opening set as they took the early lead with the 25-17 opening set victory. The Pioneers answered back in the second set and were led by a serving run by Kiara Perkins (Coudersport). She finished the set with three aces and three kills. The tough serving continued in the 3rd set as the blue & gold collected six aces in the set and the team put together their best hitting effort of the match finishing with a .481 hitting percentage. Perkins had four kills in the set while Mya VanDuyne (Greece Arcadia) and Madison Webster (Corning Painted Post) each had three. Isabella Slocum (Hornell) collected five kills in the final set while Webster added four as the team fought off all the comeback attempts by the Bengals. Jordan Stauffeneker (Lansing) was key defensively in the final set collecting seven digs.

Webster led the way for the Pioneers with 14 kills and 16 digs while Perkins finished with 14 kills and 10 digs. Sarah Raichlin (Binghamton/Chanango Valley) passed out 44 assists, Slocum was credited with 11 kills, and Stauffeneker had a team high 19 digs from her libero position.

Rachel Nance led UMFK with six digs and two blocks while Payton Spragling had five kills and 10 digs. Haley West passed out 21 assists. The Bengals were held to just a .070 hitting percentage in the game.

The Pioneers finished the match with a .256 hitting percentage and 14 service aces.

Alfred State is back in action on Friday evening when they travel to Keuka for a 5 p.m. contest with the Wolves.
