Bio

After 19 seasons at the helm of the Alfred State volleyball program, Gene Doorley has the Pioneers competing for the postseason year after year. The blue and gold are 403-214 (.653 winning percentage) during his tenure.

The Pioneers have gained national recognition under coach Dooleys direction. His team was the first sport team to qualify for the NCAA National Championships in ASC history. While earning AVCA All-Region and All-American recognition, and excelling off the court as well, as several players have boasted academic accolades.

Alfred State competed in ACAA Tournament for the third straight year. This follows three straight trips to the USCAA National Championships and two national semifinal appearances. The team has also competed in two ECAC Metro/Upstate Championships. While playing in the USCAA the Pioneers had nine USCAA All-Americans.

In the programs last seven years in the NJCAA, Doorley led the Blue and Gold to a 200-71 record (.738 winning percentage). During this run, the Lady Pioneers earned #1 seeds in the Region III Division III Tournament three times, claimed thirteen regular season tournament titles and the Region III Championship in 2007 and 2008, been ranked in the top ten of the NJCAA Division III poll, and ended the college’s 30-year quest for a trip to the National Championship.

In 2008, the team set a new program records with 38 victories (38-4) and 4th place finish at Nationals. The team also won the school’s first WNYAC championship.

Doorley has been named the AVCA Northeast Coach of the Year three times, the NJCAA District A Coach the Year twice, and the Region III Coach of the Year once. Five players were named NJCAA All-American, including Brianne McMahon who was a two-time recipient.

Doorley joined the Alfred State staff in 2002 after spending five years as the head coach at Alfred University. During his tenure the Saxons advanced to the State Championship four times, ECAC Championship, and the NCAA Division III Championship. Doorley has collected the most wins in Alfred University History (107-74)

In his 25 years as a head collegiate volleyball coach, he has accumulated 510 wins, an average of nearly 22 wins per season.

Doorley earned an associate degree from Alfred State, a bachelor’s degree in fitness and health from SUNY Cortland, and a master degree in sport management from Cortland. He also holds a teaching certificate in physical education from St. Bonaventure and is a Certified Strength and Conditioning Coach.

In addition to his coaching duties Doorley is the fitness center director and teaches physical education classes.

He and his wife Michele are the proud parents of Matt and Tayghan.
