Moore Inducted into the Hall of Fame, 2000 & 2007 National Champs Honored

Recently retired cross country and track & field coach Gary Moore was inducted in the Alfred State Athletic Department Hall of Fame at a ceremony held at the Lake Lodge. The 2000 national champion men's outdoor track & field team and the 2007 national champion women's outdoor track & field team also were honored at the festivities.

Moore who coached at Alfred State from 1978 to the spring of 2016 led four teams to NJCAA DIII National Championships (2000 Men's Outdoor Track & Field, 2003 Women's Cross Country, 2007 Women's Outdoor Track and Field, and 2011 Women's Cross Country).

He coached the Pioneers to 47 NJCAA Region III championships, helped coordinate Alfred State hosting three NJCAA Cross Country Championships and three NJCAA Outdoor Track & Field Championships. Alfred State also hosted numerous Region III Championships during his tenure. 

Moore also was the college's swim coach for a few years, taught in the physical education department, and ran the intramural program.

Current athletic director Dr. Kelly Higgins, past athletic diretor Kathy Feldman, former student-athlete and Alfred State athletic hall of famer Dawn Reinhart, and women's basketball coach Gina Boyd honored Moore with remarks before he accepted his hall of fame plaque. 

Eight members of the 2000 men's outdoor track & field team returned for the ceremony. The national champion Pioneers registered fifteen NJCAA Outdoor All-American performances after winning both the indoor and outdoor Region III titles. The national championship was the first team national championship since 1973.

Five members of the the 2007 women's outdoor track & Field team returned for the ceremony. They became only the second women's team to win a national title at Alfred State. On their way to winning the national championship, the Lady Pioneers won both the indoor and outdoor Region III titles. Alfred State registered 10 NJCAA Outdoor All-American performances, eight All-Region performances outdoors, and 16 All-Region performances indoors.

During the ceremony, Moore praised both teams for their efforts and hard work that led to the national championships. Each team member present was introduced and received a commemorative plaque.

The day started with the annual cross country alumni 5K and Coach Moore and the two teams were also honored prior to kickoff of the football game.
