Baseball

The baseball team opens up their 2017 campaign this weekend with a roadtrip to Newport News, VA for a three-game series vs. Apprentice.

Men's Basketball: 9-14, 15th in latest USCAA Poll

The Pioneers lost a pair of close contests to end the home portion of their schedule. They fell 66-63 to SUNY Canton and 83-82 to SUNY Delhi.

Justin Wallace (Mt. Vernon/Mt. St. Michael) connected on eight 3-pointers this week and led the team with 36 points. Tyrone Davis (Brooklyn/Benjamin Banneker) had a solid week with 26 points, 22 assists, and 13 rebounds. Marquis Edwards (Queens/In-Tech Academy) scored 23 while Juwan Toliver (Buffalo/McKinley)added 19 points and 13 boards.

The Pioneers shot 39.2% from the field connected on 14 of 41 three-point attempts, and hit 61.3% of their foul shots. The team also forced their opponents into 36 turnovers.

Women's Basketball: 13-7, 6th in latest USCAA Poll

The blue & gold won both of their games this past week. They downed SUNY Canton 76-47 and SUNY Delhi 61-44.

Catherine Bialecki (Alfred Almond) led the way for the Pioneers with 22 points and 21 rebounds. She also added seven blocks and five steals. Kimberly Levee (Dansville) finished in double-figures in both games and had 24 points. Joselyn Johnson (Geneva) scored a career high 22 points vs. Canton. 

The team shot 40.1% from the field this week and held their opponents to just 26.6%. On the boards, the team outrebounded their opponents to 101 to 94 and forced their opponents to 52 turnovers.

The victory over Canton marked the 400th win of the career of Head Coach Gina Boyd. She is now 401-285 in her 27th season at the helm of the program.

Lacrosse:

The lacrosse team hits the field for a scrimmage with Finger Lakes CC and Mercyhurst North East this Saturday before opening up the regular season next Saturday.

Swimming: Men 2nd, Women 3rd at AMCC Championships

The swimming team wrapped up their season with an impressive showing at the AMCC Championships. The men's team finished 2nd with 400 points while the women's team was 3rd with 376 points.

Nick Beach (Canandaigua) and twin sisters Rebecca and Sarah Stevens (Wellsville) were named the Divers of the meet following solid performances. Beach won the 3m with a finals score of 211.05 after posting a 366.5 in in the prelims. He won the 1m with a finals score of 265.15 after he scored 405.30 in the prelims. Rebecca won the 3 m with a score of 211.90 was 2nd in the 1 m competition (170.65) while Sarah won the 1 m with 188.35 and was 2nd in the 3 m with 189.5.

Ethan Dale (Lock Haven, PA) and Bryce Cutler (Newton, NJ) led the men's team. Dale was 2nd in the 100 breast (1:01.22) and 3rd in the 200 breast (2:14.27) while Cutler was 2nd in the 400 IM (4:25.57) and 3rd in the 1650 free (17:45.16). Tim Olin (Perry) finished 3rd in the 200 back (2:03.10).

Alley Sell (Hanover, PA) had an impressive showing winning by winning the 100 breaststroke (1:08.46) and the 200 breaststroke (2:31.85) and finished 2nd in the 200 IM (2:15.75). Kaileigh Lehman (Beaver River) was 3rd in the 100 breast (1:13.24) and the 200 breast (2:40.61), Josey Brewer (Letchworth) was 5th in the 400 IM (5:55.83, and Sarah Stevens was 5th in the 200 fly (2:45.93).

Numerous NCAA DIII Alfred State records were broken along with countless personal bests.

Indoor Track & Field

The indoor track and field team had the weekend off but returns to action on Saturday when they compete at the Brockport "Golden Eagle" Invitational.

Wrestling: 7-8, 3rd at USCAA Championships

The wrestling team finished 3rd out of 14 teams at the USCAA Championships held at Penn State over the weekend. The Pioneers scored 110.5 points.

George Van Valen (Ithaca) won the 184 lb. weight class. He pinned Cameron Dewey (Williamson Trade) in the quarterfinals, he defeated Josh Godzin (PS Fayette) 11-1 and won the championship match 9-4 over Cody Spinks (Alderson Broaddus). Van Valen is now 32-6 on the year.

Konnor Kremer (Horseheads) finished 2nd in the 174 lb. competition. He pinned Joe Knarr (Penn State DuBois) and won 14-0 over Phillip Marra (Penn State New Kensington) in the semifinals. He lost in the finals 10-5.

Casey Connor (Barnstable, MA) and Jeff Andrews (Randolph) each earned 3rd place finishes. Connor was 4-1 on day with three pins in the 133 lb. weight class while Andrews was 3-1 with two pins in the heavyweight bracket. Tristan Almeter (Iroquois) was 2-2 and finished 4th at 165 lbs. while Alex Mears (Averill Park) was 4-2 on the day with three pins and finished 5th in the heavyweight bracket.

In their final dual meet of the year, the blue & gold fell 40-7 to Lycoming. Van Valen won 10-1 over Dallas Labar and Kremer won 4-1 over Brandon Conrad.
