Pioneer Weekly Update: Sept. 4 Edition

Cross Country: Men & Women 5th at Houghton

The Alfred State cross country team opened up the 2017 campaign with a 5th place finish in both the men's and women's races at the Houghton College Twilight Invitational. 

Jacob Hanss (East Rochester) was the top finisher on the men's side. He crossed the finish line of the 5k course in 21st (16:27.9). Shawn Rutledge (Watkins Glen) was 31st (16:51.6) and Ryan Lohr (West Seneca) was 51st (17:57.8). The College of New Jersey won the men's competition with a score of 25 followed by RIT, Roberts Wesleyan, and Houghton. The Pioneers scored a 145 on the day.

Lindsey Thiel (Liverpool) was the top finisher on the women's side for the Pioneers. She finished the 4k course in 16th (15:56.1). Olivia Leonti (Port Byron) was 35th (16:43.6) and Cassandra Ryan (Gloversville) was 53rd (18:36.8). TCNJ took the women's title with a score of 20 followed by RIT, Roberts Wesleyan, and Houghton. The Pioneers scored a 148.

Football: 0-1

The Coast Guard scored three times in the 1st quarter as they earned a 34-7 victory in the opening game of the 2017 season.

The Pioneers were held off the board until their final possession of the contest. During that possession the Pioneers drove down the field 75-yards and capped off the drive by connecting a 13-yard pass play from Hunter Evingham (Bolivar Richburg) to Reice Woodward (Oakfield Alabama). The drive featured two 4th down conversions.

Eli Frantz (Swansboro, NC) was 14 for 17 for 115 yards in the 1st half while Evingham was 10 for 22 for 70 yards and a score in the 2nd half. Woodward led all receivers with eight catches for 72 yards and a score. Chase Prickett (Perry) caught six passes for 52 yards while Joseph Moscato (Valley Stream/Kellenberg) caught six passes for 36 yards. The Pioneers were held to just 23 yards rushing on 24 carries.

Austin Parker (Port Byron) led the Pioneer defense with 10 tackles while Michael Zimmerman (Canandaigua) finished with nine. Jhamel Cohen (Brooklyn/South Shore) intercepted a pass and Carlisle Philip (Brooklyn/South Shore) recovered a fumble.

Men's Soccer: 1-1

The Pioneers split their opening weekend contests. The shutout SUNY Delhi 2-0 on Friday but were downed 8-1 by Medaille on Sunday.

Ku Reh (Buffalo/Riverside) and Kory Zimmer (Livonia) each netted a goal while Vinny Biancuzzo (Genesee Valley) made five saves to record the shutout in the victory over Delhi. Jake Vattimo (Geneseo) and Chris Balys (Holley) picked up assists.

Medaille's James Lang recorded a hat trick in the Mavericks 8-1 victory. The Pioneers lone goal came in the closing second when Nathan Adamec (Lancaster) scored on a direct kick.

Women's Soccer: 2-0

The Lady Pioneers won both of their contests this past weekend to open up the 2017 season. They defeated SUNY Delhi 4-1 on Friday and then downed SUNY Cobleskill 9-0 on Sunday.

Delhi got on the board first in the teams season opener but Dannielle O'Buckley (Jamaica/Ansbach) tied it up in the closing seconds of the 1st half and then the Lady Pioneers scored two quick goals in the 2nd half to put the game out of reach. Darien Hooker (Canisteo Greenwood) and Brooke Geibel (Arkport) scored 2:06 into the half. Julia Yanarella (Roy Ketcham) capped the scoring with just over 20 minutes remaining in th game. Sarah Williams (Caledonia Mumford) and Carissa Pompa (Rochester/Mercy) were credited with assists. In net, Allison Danielak (Brockport) made two saves to record the victory in her first start of her senior year.

O'Buckley scored three times and had an assist in the victory over Cobleskill. Michayla Salatel (Geneseo) had a pair of goals and an assist, Pompa scored twice, and Kylie Newman (Waverly) had a goal and an assist. Mineti also scored while Leigh Swartzfager (Keshequa) passed out an assist. Danielak and Kathryn Parson (York) combined for the shutout in net.

Volleyball 0-3

The volleyball team fell in all three of their matches this weekend at the Morrisville Tournament. The team fell 25-20, 25-21, 25-21 to Morrisville, 25-11, 25-10, 25-17 to Keystone, and 25-5, 25-11, 25-14 to MIT.

Bryanna Godfrey (Tioga) was named all-tournament team after leading the team with 15 kills and chipping in 10 digs. Madison Webster (Corning) finished with a team best 25 digs.
