Team Updates

Men's Basketball

The Pioneers open up the season the 2017-18 season this weekend with a pair of games at the Special Tees Tournament held in Alfred. Friday's action will be played at Alfred State with Alfred University taking on D'Youville at 5 p.m. and Alfred State tangling with Cazenovia at 7 p.m. Saturday the action shifts to Alfred University where the Pioneers take on D'Youville at 2 p.m. and the Saxons take on Cazenovia at 4 p.m.

Women's Basketball

The women's basketball team will open up their 2017-18 season this week with a pair of games. They host Villa Maria on Wednesday at 6 p.m. and then travel to Medaille on Friday for a 6 p.m. contest.

Football: 1-9

Castleton scored two defensive touchdowns in the 3rd quarter en route to a season ending 49-21 victory over Alfred State on Saturday.

After falling behind in the 1st quarter, the Pioneers bounced right back two plays later when Kiegan Brown (Cortland-Cyber Security) broke a handful of tackles and raced 55-yards for the tying score. The Spartans scored twice to make it a 14-point lead but the Pioneers put together a 58-yard drive that was capped off by a 16-yard pass play from Hunter Evingham (Bolivar Richburg-Undeclared) to Jalen Long (Rochester/Bishop Kearney-Sport Management) to make it 21-14 at half.

The game was decided in a three minute stretch of the 3rd quarter. Jakob Trautwein intercepted a pass and returned it 30 yards for a Spartans score with 8:14 left in the quarter, With 6:54 remaining, the Spartans scored on a pass play, and 1:42 later Wyatt Prue recovered a fumble in the endzone after sack by Chris Rice.

Evingham dove in from one-yard out in the final minute of the 3rd quarter but Castleton would not allow the Pioneers to get any closer.

Evingham finished 11 for 24 for 110 yards, Brown finished the day with 72 yards rushing on 18 carries, and Willerm Greffin (Brooklyn/South Shore-Sport Management) caught three passes for 45 yards.

John Lauretti (Seaford-Tech Management) capped a solid season with 16 tackles (5.5 for a loss) and three sacks. Dashown Wilson (Bronx/DeWitt Clinton-Criminal Justice) added eight tackles and an interception, Anders Presthus (Lansing-Radiologic Technology) also registered eight tackles, and Brenlee Gonzalez Delgado (Beacon-Liberal Arts) had seven tackles and an interception.

Swimming: Men 0-3, Women 2-1

The swimming team returned home to battle Oswego. The Lakers earned a 188-103 victory on the men's side and a 208-89 victory in the women's competition.

Tim Olin (Perry-Mechanical Engineering Tech) and Ethan Dale (Lock Haven, PA-Architecture) picked up individual event wins for the Pioneers. Olin won the 50 backstroke in 28.18 while Dale won the 100 IM (1:00.02). Dale was also 2nd in the 200 breast (2:26.05) while Olin was 2nd in the 100 IM (1:02.54). 

Anthony Kahwaty (Jefferson Township, NJ-Computer Information Technology) was 2nd in the 200 fly (2:25.28), Ethan Tatro (Lockport-Criminal Justice) was 2nd in the 100 free (54.65), and Nathan Miller (Gananda-Mechanical Engineering Technology) was 2nd in the 50 fly (26.37). Nick Beach (Canandaigua-Heavy Equipment Operations) was 2nd in both the 3m (233.30) and the 1m (231.05) diving competitions.

Kathryn Lewis (Sanborn/Niagara Wheatfield-Architecture) led the women's team with three 2nd place finishes. She was 2nd in the 1000 free (12:10.68), 2nd in the 100 free (58.62), and 2nd in the 500 free (5:48.63). Lauren Earley (Waterford/Shenendehowa-Forensic Science) was 2nd in the 50 back (32.53) and 2nd in the 200 back (2:30.48) while Elizabeth Drake (Lansing-Vet Tech and Ag Tech) was 2nd in the 200 free (2:18.19). The women's 400 free relay team of Lewis, Rachel Caltagirone (Buffalo/Tonawanda-Financial Planning), Sarah Stevens (Wellsville-Interior Design), and Elizabeth Furmanski (Albion-Nursing) was 2nd in 4:11.23.

Wrestling:

The wrestling team had the week off but returns to action on Sunday when they travel to the John Carroll Duals.
