Scenes from the 2018 Track & Field Spectacular

6th Annual Special Olympics Event a Major Success

The 6th Annual Alfred State Special Olympics Track & Field Spectacular held on Friday morning was deemed a major success. Nearly 300 athletes representing 13 local school districts took part in the event.

After an Olympic style opening ceremony, athletes competed in one track event (400 m, 200 m, 100 m, 50 m) and in one field event (shot put, softball throw, long jump). Every athlete was awarded a ribbon at the conclusion of their event.

Paul Welker, assistant athletic director at Alfred State, looks forward to this event each year. "Our relationship with the local schools and Special Olympics New York continues to grow. Our event grew by 15 athletes this year and we are nearing the 300 athlete plateau. Our student-athletes and our athletic department look forward to this event and appreciate our partnership with Daniel Kuberka and the rest of the local Special Olympic staff."

The Special Olympics is a partner of DIII of the NCAA.  Through this partnership, Division III student-athletes across the country are encouraged to participate in existing Special Olympics events, create their own events, or otherwise serve to support Special Olympics organization.
