Baseball: 15-12, 7-5 AMCC

The baseball team was 4-1 for the second straight week. They were also 3-1 in AMCC action. They defeated Keuka 13-12, swept a pair from D'Youville (4-2 and 10-0), and split with Penn State Behrend (L 12-0 and W 13-9).

Josh Laurie (LeRoy) returned to the lineup and led the team with a .500 batting average (7 for 14). He had a double, a triple, a homer, and 6 RBI. Andy Pichardo (Queens/Academy of American Studies) was 7 for 17 with 6 RBI, Danny Doran (Irondequoit) was 8 for 20 with four doubles, a homer, and 4 RBI, and Colin Johnson (Alfred Almond) was 7 for 18 with 4 RBI. As a team the Pioneers hit .358 with 16 extra base hits.

Jarrod Deaton (Newburgh Free) was 2-0 in four innings pitched out of the bullpen. Andrew Santobuono (Unatego) allowed just six hits and one unearned run in a complete game victory while Garrett Mack (Avon) pitched his third straight complete game gem.

With 15 wins on the season, the 2019 Pioneers have established a new NCAA record for wins in a season.

Lacrosse: 5-6

The lacrosse team won their second straight and improved to 5-6 on the year with a 9-4 victory at La Roche on Saturday afternoon. The Pioneers outscored the Redhawks 6-0 in the 2nd half.

The Redhawks score the first two goals of the game before AJ Soto (Churchville) tied it up with a pair of goals late in the 1st quarter. He scored with 2:06 left after getting a pass from Tristan Badger (Rush Henrietta) and tied it up with 44 seconds on an unassisted tally. LaRoche answered right back and scored seven seconds later to head into the 2nd quarter with a 3-2 advantage. Soto completed the hat trick 1:56 into the 2nd quarter when he scored with the extra man after getting a pass from Joe Johnson(Churchville). Jake Podisiadly scored the only other goal in the quarter as the Redhawks led 4-3 at the break.

The Pioneers outshot the Redhawks 28-13 in the 2nd half as they took control. Nic Covelli (Carmel) tied the game up 1:30 into the 2nd half and Soto's 4th goal 44 seconds later gave the Pioneers their first lead. A lead they would not give up. Cade Casey(Plattsburgh/Peru) scored ten minutes later to make it 6-4. Soto and Casey's goals were assisted by Johnson. With those assists, Johnson climbed to the 200 career point plateau. Covelli made it 7-4 heading to the final quarter when he scored with 13 seconds left after getting a pass from Quintin Himko (Johnson City). Johnson scored his first of the game 1:24 into the 4th after getting a pass from Tucker Sutphen (Brockport). Tyler Baker (Rome Free) capped the scoring after getting a pass from Nick Griffin (Penn Yan).

Soto led the way with his four goals while Johnson finished with a goal and three assists. Covelli chipped in a pair of scores while Scott Fingar (Penn Yan) led the team with seven ground balls. Matt Cobb (Churchville) was tough in the net as he made nine saves and shutout La Roche in the 2nd half.

Softball: 7-10

The softball team was 1-2 over the past week. They split a doubleheader at Keuka (W 7-5 and L 11-3) and lost a rain shortened game 6-0 vs. Hilbert.

Trailing 5-3 in the 7th vs. Keuka, the Pioneers collected five hits that resulted in four runs that gave Alfred State the deciding runs. Madison Papaj (Holley) started the inning off with a double, Angela Martone (Candor) walked, and Morgan Franklin (Wellsville) made it 5-4 with a RBI single. After a fielder's choice, the Pioneers collected three straight hits. Brittany Fisher (Indianapolis, IN) singled to load the bases, Marissa Varela(Egg Harbor Twp, NJ) tied it with a RBI single to left, and Arianna Traugott (Elmira) gave the team the lead with a RBI single to left. Fisher added an insurance run when she scored on a passed ball. Fisher allowed a one-out hit in the 7th but didn't allow Keuka to plate a run to secure the Pioneers 7th win of the season.

Traugott was 2 for 4 with a RBI while Ashley Peterson (Maybrook/Valley Central) was 2 for 4. Fisher earned her 5th win of the season with a complete game effort.

In the nightcap, the Wolves scored three in the 3rd to regrab the lead. They put the game away with a big 6th inning when they six runs. Traugott and Varela both hit doubles in game two but the Pioneers were limited to just four hits.

Versus Hilbert, the Hawks collected single runs in the 1st and 3rd innings and put the game out of reach with four unearned runs, all scored with two outs, in the 5th. Traugott had the lone hit, a double in the 5th. The game was called due to rain in the bottom of the 6th inning.

Men's Track & Field:

The men's outdoor track & field team had several impressive performances at the Cortland Friday Night Under the Light Invitational. 

Derek Stein led the way with a strong performance in the high jump. Stein finished tied for 1st in the event with a leap of 1.86 m. Jacob Wadsworth (Dansville) was 3rd in the 400 hurdles (57.90) and 3rd in the long jump (6.78 m) to lead the way. He was also part of the 4x100 relay team that finished 4th. In that race he teamed with Cameron Howard (Brockport), Jordan Stauffer (LeRoy), and Corey Seymour to finish in 45.55. Stauffer was 4th also 4th in the long jump (6.37 m) and Howard was also 6th in the 100 (11.42) and 7th in the 200 (23.45).

Jesse Johnson was 4th in the high jump (1.78 m), Jacob Drew (Corning Painted Post) was 5th in the 800 (2:05.46), Bryce Chapman (Geneseo) was 5th in the javelin (39.25), and Zion Ponder was 8th in the long jump (6.28 m).

Women's Track & Field:

The women's track & field continued their season at the Cortland Friday Under the Lights Invite.

Katherine Frascella (Franklinville) was 7th in the 3,000 steeplechase in 14:11.23 while Delaney Ward (South Jefferson) was 8th (15:43.50). Marissa Sly (N. Tonawanda) was 10th in the long jump (4.20 m) and 12th in the 100 hurdles (18.73) while Julia Yanarella (Roy Ketcham) was 12th in the javelin (20.22 m)

The 4x400 relay team finished 5th in 5:29.72.
