Pioneer Weekly Update: October 21st Edition

Cross Country: 

The Pioneers have been busy preparing for the postseason. They are next in action on November 2nd when they race at the AMCC Championships held at Penn State Behrend.

Football: 2-5, 0-2 ECFC

Alfred State and Gallaudet combined for 103 points and nearly 1,000 yards of offense in a ECFC slugfest. Behind a big 2nd half, the Bison earned a 62-41 victory.

The Pioneers led 20-19 at the half but the Bison scored on their first three drives of the 2nd half to take control of the game. 

Dashown Wilson (Bronx/DeWitt Clinton) finished with 284 yards and three scores passing to go along with 36 yards rushing (two scores). Shy'rel Broadwater (Syracuse/Cicero North Syracuse) had a big day as he caught seven passes for 151 yards and three scores. Brian Williams (Fort Washington, MD/Hargrave Military) led the Pioneers with nine tackles while Andrew Pierre-Paul (Brooklyn/Erasmus Hall), Rylie Van Fleet (Maine Endwell), and Paul Portorreal (Buffalo/Cheektowaga) each had eight stops. 

Men's Soccer: 1-12, 1-6 AMCC

The Pioneers split a pair of matches this week. They defeated Hilbert 4-1 but lost a tight 1-0 match vs. Pitt Greensburg.

Anthony Smith (Colden/Springville) scored a pair of goals while Ade Adesanya (Brooklyn/Progress) and Camren Larabee (Cuba Rushford) scored once in the victory over Hilbert. Smith scored the game winner while Larabee, Adesanya, Noah Holmok (Alfred Almond), and David Benson (Clifton Park/Shenendowa) picked up assists. Nate Moulton (Madrid Waddington) made four saves in net in the 1st half while Nico Coria (Honeoye Falls Lima) didn't allow a goal in the 2nd half.

Versus UPG, the Bobcats scored late in the 1st half for the lone goal. Alfred State fired 22 shots at Greensburg but couldn't get the equalizer.

Women's Soccer: 2-9-1, 2-5 AMCC

The women's soccer team split a pair of matches. They won 3-0 on the road vs. Hilbert and then lost a 2-0 decision to Pitt Greensburg.

Emily Winter (North Collins) scored a pair of goals as the Pioneers defeated Hilbert. Katherine O'Buckley (Queens/Francis Lewis) also scored while Grace Donovan (Elma/Iroquois) picked up an assist. Gretchen Hendrickson (Canisteo Greenwood) made six saves in nearly eighty minutes of work in the net while Laura Mecca (Hamburg) made two saves in the final ten minutes.

The Pioneers played tough vs. the undefeated Bobcats on Saturday. UPG held a 17-6 shot advantage in the game and took advantage of two breakout plays in the 1st half to net goals. Hendrickson made seven saves for the blue & gold.

Men's Swimming & Diving: 0-1

Matt Walker (Kenmore West) set a new school record in the 1,000 free as the men's swimming and diving team opened up the 2019-20 season. The Pioneers fell to defending AMCC Champion Penn State Behrend 162-117.

Walker swam the 1,000 free in 10:42.19 to earn 3rd place and to set a new standard for the event during the NCAA Division III era. Walker also won the 400 IM (4:33.25) was also 2nd in the 500 free (5:08.81). Austin Miller (Hornell) won both the 1m and 3m diving competitions. He scored 188.70 on the 1m board and 195.40 on the 3m. Westin Perry (Canisteo Greenwood) won the 100 back in 58.04. Perry was also 2nd in the 50 free (24.14) and the 200 back (2:08.37). Ethan Dale (Lock Haven, PA) was 2nd in the 200 fly (2:13.50), the 200 free (2:29.54), and the 400 IM (4:42.84). 

Women's Swimming & Diving: 0-1

The women's swimming and diving team dove into the 2019-20 season with a AMCC battle with Penn State Behrend. The defending AMCC champions earned a 175-90 victory.

Sarah Stevens (Wellsville) won both the 1m and 3m diving competitions to lead the way. She scored a 166.75 in the 1m and 150.85 in the 3m. Rebecca Stevens (Wellsville) took 2nd in the 1m (161.80). Kelsey Lynch (Wellsville) was 2nd in the 200 free (2:18.84) and the 200 fly (2:40.94). Mikaela Snayczuk (Machias/Pioneer) was 2nd in the 100 breast (1:21.15) while Sarah Stevens was 3rd (1:21.24).

Volleyball: 8-10, 2-5 AMCC

The volleyball team was 1-2 this past week. They swept Hilbert 3-0 but fell in a AMCC tri-match to Mt. Aloysius and Franciscan.

In the victory over Hilbert, Alyssa Fox (Letchworth) led the team with 12 kills and four service aces. Kiara Perkins (Coudersport, PA) finished with seven kills, Megan Gridley (Corning Painted Post) had eight digs, and Jordan McCooey (Horseheads) passed out 23 assists. 

Perkins led the way with seven kills and six digs vs. Mt. Aloysius. McCooey passed out 21 assists and had 12 digs while Jordan Stauffeneker (Lansing) finished with nine digs.

Versus Franciscan, McCooey collected 20 assists and 10 digs while Stauffeneker finished with nine digs. Perkins finished with six kills and Fox added five.
