Week in Review:

Cross Country:

The Pioneers had the week off but will host the Gary Moore Invitational this Saturday. The race will also serve as a preview of the AMCC Championships that will be held at Alfred State on October 30th.

Football: 0-2

The football team fell just short in a 28-27 battle at the University of Rochester on Saturday.

Alfred State led 27-21 after a 53-yard touchdown pass from Aaron Jenkins (Canfield, OH) to Shy'rel Broadwater (Syracuse/Cicero North Syracuse) with 12:16 left in the game. Neither team could score on their next possession but the U of R put together a 15-play drive to score with 2:03 remaining to retake the lead. The Pioneers had one last chance but Rochester ended the threat and sealed the win with an interception.

Jenkins finished 19 for 31 for 324 yards and two scores. Broadwater caught nine passes for 247 yards and two scores. Jake Palmer (Albany/Voorheesville) rushed the ball 19 time for 62 yards. Dawson Fontaine (Bensalem, PA) connected on a pair of 21-yard field goals.

Jeremiah Nixon (Staten Island/Curtis) led the Pioneer defense with 12 tackles, a forced fumble, and a fumble recovery. Rylie Van Fleet (Main Endwell), Joel Smith (Livonia), and Nuhsar Mike (Syracuse/Leadership Academy) all were credited with seven tackles.

The Pioneers out-gained the Yellowjackets 429 to 347. They were 9 for 15 on 3rd downs and held Rochester to 2 for 6. Both teams turned the ball over twice and Alfred State won the time of possession battle (34:53).

Men's Soccer: 1-3

The Pioneers lost 1-0 in overtime in both of their contests this week.

Penn College scored 37 seconds into the second overtime to defeat the Pioneers on Tuesday. Thad Grierson (Perry) was outstanding in goal as he made seven saves.

Potsdam netted the lone goal of the game 5:38 into the first overtime on Saturday. Grierson made eight saves on the day including stopping a penalty kick in the 79th minute.

Women's Soccer: 3-1

Alfred State ran their winning streak to three games with a pair of home victories this weekend. They defeated Wells College 8-0 and Elmira 2-1.

Emily Winter (North Collins) and Lauren Bondgren (Avon) scored twice in the 1st half vs. Wells as the Pioneers jumped out to a 7-0 lead. Madison Kice (Canadensis, PA), Allison Lundmark (Jamestown), and Emily O'Duffy (Livonia) also scored. Grace Collins (Greece Olympia) added a goal in the 2nd half. ASC held a 27 to 2 shot advantage.

Collins and Kice scored 1st half goals as the Pioneers defeated Elmira on Sunday. The Pioneer defense played tough in a physical game in front of Sierra Schofield (Delran, NJ) to preserve the victory. Schofield finished with four saves to earn the victory.

Volleyball: 4-1

Alfred State split a pair of matches at a tri-match at Hartwick on Sunday afternoon. The Pioneers swept Cazenovia 25-11, 25-17, 25-14 in their opening match but fell 25-22, 12-25, 18-25, 16-25 to the hosts.

The Pioneers got contributions from everyone in the sweep of Cazenovia. Keturah Gregory (Laurel, MD) finished with five kills, five blocks, and three service aces to lead the way. Kiara Perkins (Coudersport, PA) had six kills and seven digs, Racquel Gertsenberger (Schoharie), Alyssa Martin (Portville), and Faith McCombs (Amityville/Copiague) all had five kills, and Megan Gridley (Corning Painted Post) led the team with eight digs. Nayomie Ferrer (Eastridge) passed out 13 assists while Nicolina Sottile (Lindenhurst) passed out 11.

The blue & gold started off fast by taking set one vs. Hartwick but the Hawks used a solid service game (19 aces) to rally for the victory. Perkins led the team with 10 kills and 11 digs. Ferrer passed out 30 assists and registered 10 digs while McCombs was credited with six kills.
