Week in Review:

Men's Cross Country: 

The Pioneers finished 5th at the Houghton Invitational in their final meet before the postseason. They scored a 162 as a team.

Gavin Bathgate (East Rochester) led the way again for the Pioneers. He ran the 8k course in 26:54.47 to earn 10th place. Ryan Weir (Schertz, TX) was 58th (29:41.41), Aiden Bonomo (Manalapan, NJ) was 60th (29:55.14), Andrew Hvisdak (Orchard Park/Hamburg) finished 73rd (31:22.89), and Brian Clark (Bethpage) was the fifth man in finishing 74th (31:33.60).

Women's Cross Country:

The women's cross country team finished 6th at the Houghton Invitational on Saturday. The Pioneers scored a 182 in the meet.

Katie Watkins (Addison) led the blue & gold with a 49th place finish. She finished the 6k course in 28:37.92. Sarah Rivet (Shenendehowa) was 50th (28:38.38), Summer Kier (East Rochester) was 61st (31:52.46), Anna Hersom (Byron Bergen) was 65th (32:27.22), and Mattison Buckley (Wellsville) rounded out the top five with a 68th place finish (34:15.23).

Football: 2-3, 1-0 ECFC

Alfred State rushed for 267 yards as they opened up ECFC play with a 35-20 victory over Maritime.

The Pioneers sandwiched two huge drives around halftime to take control of the contest. Maritime tied the game at 14-14 with 51 seconds left in the 2nd quarter but Alfred State would only need three plays and 29 seconds to take back the lead. After the kickoff, Aaron Jenkins (Canfield, OH) registered a 23-yard rush, found Shy'rel Broadwater (Syracuse/Cicero North Syracuse) on a 16-yard pass play, and connected on a 23-yard touchdown pass to Ben Ba (Harlem/Park East) to make it 21-14 at halftime.

On the opening kickoff of the 2nd half, Alfred State surprised the Privateers when Dawson Fontaine (Bensalem, PA) executed a perfect on-side kick that he recovered to set up another scoring drive. Eight plays later, Jenkins connected with Broadwater on a 16-yard scoring play to make it 28-14.

Maritime's offense was held off the board the whole 2nd half but their special teams scored late in the 3rd when they recovered a botched snap on a punt to make it 28-20. On the ensuing drive, Jenkins made it a two-score game again when he outran the Privateer defense and ran in from 40-yards out to make it 35-20. The Pioneer defense held Maritime on their next three drives to secure the victory.

Jake Palmer (Voorheesville) capped a pair of scoring drives in the 1st half with touchdown runs (3 and 1). 

Jenkins finished the day with 222 yards rushing and one score on 22 carries. He also was 8 for 18 for 95 yards and two scores. Palmer rushed for 66 yards and two scores on 18 carries. Ba was the leading receiver with four catches for 51 yards.

Brock Weist (Harpursville) was huge for the Pioneer defense. He recorded six tackles (five solo) and had three sacks. Silas Egenlauf (Spencerport) led the team with nine tackles. The Pioneer defense finished with five sacks and blocked both a field goal attempt and an extra point (Rayshawn Powell and Te'Hari Campbell).

Men's Soccer: 4-7, 1-2 AMCC

The men's soccer team had the week off but return to AMCC play this week with a pair of home matches this week.

Women's Soccer: 4-5, 1-2 AMCC

The Pioneers had the week off and return to action this week with AMCC matches vs. Medaille and Mt. Aloysius.

Men's Swimming & Diving: 1-0

The men's swimming & diving team opened up the 2021-22 season with a 181-88 victory over Buffalo State on Saturday afternoon. Westin Perry (Canisteo Greenwood), Stuart Yates (Naples), and Kellen Fletcher (Wrightstown, NJ) were all double individual event winners.

Perry won the 100 back in 54.06 and the 100 free in 48.93, Yates won the 100 breast in 59.59 and won the 200 breast in 2:26.10, and Fletcher won the 200 free in 1:52.98 and the 200 fly in 2:05.39

Riley Hoyt (Tulsa, OK) won the 1,000 free in 11:07.60, Harry Schafer (Warsaw/Notre Dame) won the 500 free in 5:19.28, Luca Aldewereld (Cleveland, OH) won the 50 free in 22.14, Brianna Dixon (Brentwood, NH) won the 200 back in 2:03.79, and Austin Miller (Hornell) won the 3m diving competition with a score of 248.

The 200 free relay team of Perry, Aldewereld, Jazz Widney (Tulsa, OK), and Yates set a new school record with a time of 1:30.07 while the 200 medley relay team (Perry, Yates, Fletcher, and Aldewereld) won in 1:37.19

Women's Swimming & Diving: 1-0

The women's swimming and diving team had an impressive start to the 2021-22 season as they defeated Buffalo State 145-95. Mikaela Snayczuk (Machias/Pioneer) and Alyssa James (Pittsford Mendon) were triple individual event winners.

Mikaela Snayczuk won the 100 breast in 1:12.99, the 200 fly in 2:50.57, and the 100 fly in 1:08.13 while James won the 100 back in 1:06.58, the 200 back in 2:25.01, and the 500 free in 5:59.98.

Madison Snayczuk (Machias/Pioneer) won the 200 free in 2:10.85 and the 100 free in 58.19,  Sarah Streeter (Byron Bergen) won the 1m diving competition with a score of 148.75, and Sydney Koob (Plainwell, MI) won the 200 IM in 2:45.09. 

The 200 medley relay team of James, Madison Snayczuk, Mikaela Snayczuk, and Sarah Konyndyk (Grand Rapids, MI) won in 1:58.90 while the 200 free relay team of Alina Kisluk (Hamburg), Mackenzie Gillette (Elmira/Notre Dame), Gabriela Leite (Little Rock, AR), and Koob won in 2:01.48.

Volleyball: 11-1, 2-0 AMCC

The volleyball team kept rolling with a solid weekend at Lycoming. They defeated Lycoming 25-21, 20-25, 25-17, 25-15 and Nazareth 25-17, 25-21, 25-17. They also swept Harrisburg Area CC in an exhibition match.

In the four set win over Lycoming, Kiara Perkins (Coudersport, PA) led the blue & gold with 11 kills and 10 digs while Keturah Gregory (Laurel, MD) chipped in 10 kills, served five aces, and finished the day with a .533 hitting percentage. Nayomie Ferrer (Eastridge) finished with 37 assists, 10 digs, and six service aces, Emma Petrichick (Genesee Valley) led the team with 12 digs, and Faith McCombs (Amityville/Copiague) finished with nine kills.

Alyssa Martin (Portville) and McCombs led the team with eight kills each in the sweep of Nazareth. Perkins finished with seven kills and 10 digs while Petrichick finished with a team high 15 digs. Ferrer passed out 31 assists and was credited with nine digs.

Ferrer was huge in the match-up with HACC. She passed out 24 assists and had 10 service aces. Perkins finished with eight kills and nine digs while Gregory had eight kills.

Alfred State has now won seven straight matches.
