Week in Review:

Men's Basketball:

The 2021-22 season tips off this week and the Pioneers play three contests. They travel to RIT before playing in the Alfred Special Tee's Tournament on Friday (St. Lawrence) and Saturday (Ithaca).

Women's Basketball:

Alfred State opens up the 2021-22 season this week with a pair of road contests. They head to SUNY Delhi on Wednesday and travel to Utica on Saturday.

Cross Country: 

The Pioneers head down 390 on Saturday to compete in the 2021 NCAA Division III East Regionals at Geneseo.

Football: 5-4, 4-1 ECFC

The Pioneers won their third straight and remained in a tie for the top spot in the ECFC with a 35-24 victory over Castleton.

After a Rylie Van Fleet (Endwell) interception, the Pioneers drove down the field and took the lead 5:54 into the game when Aaron Jenkins (Canfield, OH) rushed in from three-yards out. The Spartans cut the lead to 7-3 early in the 2nd quarter with a field goal. A Castleton fumble set up the Pioneers second scoring drive of the game. Jenkins capped the four-play drive with a 19-yard pass play to Jake Palmer (Voorheesville). The Pioneers led 13-3 at half.

Castleton came right out of halftime and scored on their opening drive. Two possessions later, Alfred State made it a two-score game when Ben Ba (Harlem/Park East) caught 27-yard touchdown pass from Jenkins. After a huge defensive stop in their own red zone, the Pioneers went on a 9-play drive capped by a Jenkins two-yard scoring rush to make it 25-10. Castleton answered right back on their next offensive play to cut it back to a one-score game. Dawson Fontaine (Bensalem, PA) made it 28-17 on the next drive when he drilled a 34-yard field goal. After another big defensive stop, the Pioneers added to their lead when Palmer rushed in from five-yards out with 5:33 left. The Spartans scored again on a pass play with 3:18 left to make it 35-24 but they would never get any closer. 

Jenkins finished the day 16 for 29 for 359 yards and two scores. He also rushed 24 times for 69 yards and two scores. Shy'rel Broadwater (Cicero North Syracuse) caught two passes for a team high 103 yards while Ba finished with six catches for 91 yards and a score. Roman Napoleon (Allegany Limestone) caught two passes for 88 yards.

Dakotah Mathis (Farmingdale) led the defense with 13 tackles while Jeremiah Nixon (Staten Island/Curtis) had eight stops. Joel Smith (Livonia) had seven stops, a sack, and a fumble recovery, Van Fleet had seven tackles to go with an interception, and Te'Hari Campbell (Auburn) and Nuhsar Mike (Syracuse/Leadership Academy) each had seven stops and a sack.

The Pioneers will head into the final week of the regular season tied in the ECFC standings with Anna Maria. The AMCATS defeated Gallaudet 37-21 this weekend. 

Men's Soccer: 7-11

In the AMCC Semifinals, Alfred State scored first but Medaille scored four unanswered goals to advance to the finals with a 4-1 victory. The men's soccer team won six more games than the 2019 season and this was the first appearance for the Pioneers in the AMCC Tournament.

Jack Leahy (Pittsford Sutherland) got the Pioneers on the board 11:02 into the game after getting a pass from David Benson (Shenendehowa). Medaille answered back just over four minutes later and took the lead for goal in the 23rd minute. They added a pair of insurance goals in the 2nd half.

Thad Grierson (Perry) made nine saves in net for ASC. 

Men's Swimming & Diving: 4-0

The men's swimming & diving team improved to 4-0 on the year with a 127-12 victory over Wells on Sunday afternoon. The Pioneers won every event in the competition.

Kellen Fletcher (Wrightstown, NJ) and Austin Miller (Hornell) were the lone double individual event winner. Fletcher won the 1,000 free in 10:50.84 and the 100 fly (52.24) while Miller won the 1m (222.91) and 3m (244.65) diving competition.

Westin Perry (Canisteo Greenwood) won the 200 free (1:48.66), Jack Friedah (York, PA) won the 100 back (56.70), Stuart Yates (Naples) won the 100 breast (59.69), Patrick Roberts (East Aurora) won the 200 fly (2:06.36), Luca Aldewereld (Cleveland, OH) won the 50 free (22.14), Parker Brod (East Aurora) won the 100 free (50.94), Brianna Dixon (Brentwood, NH) won the 200 back (2:00.54), and Tanner Fixsen (Stayton, OR) won the 500 free (5:16).

The 200 free relay team of Jazz Widney (Tulsa, OK), Brod, Perry, and Aldewereld improved on their school record with a time of 1:29.46 while the 200 medley relay team of Perry, Yates, Fletcher, and Aldewereld won in 1:53.26

Women's Swimming & Diving: 4-1

The women's swimming and diving team earned two more victories on Sunday afternoon. They defeated Wells 146-136 and Franciscan 110-102.

Madison Snayczuk (Machias/Pioneer), Alyssa James (Pittsford Mendon), and Mikaela Snayczuk (Machias/Pioneer) all won three individual events to lead the way. Madison Snayczuk won the 200 free (2:07.21), the 50 free (25.66), and the 100 free (56.91), James won the 100 back (1:06.88), the 200 back (2:26.71), and the 500 free (5:48.94), and Mikaela Snayczuk won the 100 breast (1:12.70), the 200 breast (2:43.67), and the 200 IM (2:27.29).

Sarah Streeter (Byron Bergen) was 1st on the 3m board (131.65) and 2nd on the 1m (127) while Mackenzie Gillette (Elmira Notre Dame) was 2nd in the 200 fly (2:40.67) and 2nd in the 100 fly (1:10.75)

The 200 medley relay team of James, Mikaela Snayczuk, Gillette, and Olivia Eckstrom (Frewsburg) won in 2:00.28.

Volleyball: 18-3, AMCC Runner Up

The blue & gold swept Penn State Altoona 25-20, 27-25, 25-19 in the AMCC semifinals to advance to the championship match. The Pioneers couldn't get going and fell 25-17, 25-15, 25-14 to Penn State Behrend.

In the semis, the Pioneers got a solid team effort. Five players finished with seven or more kills and three had more than 10 digs. Karleigh Haines (Jamestown) led the team with nine kills and 13 digs while Kiara Perkins (Coudersport, PA) finished with nine kills and 12 digs. Keturah Gregory (Laurel, MD) chipped in with eight kills while Alyssa Martin (Portville) and Faith McCombs (Copiague) each had seven kills. The Pioneers hit .278 for the game including hitting .350 in the third set. Nayomie Ferrer (Eastridge) passed out 35 assists and accumulated nine digs and five kills. Emma Petrichick (Genesee Valley) led the team with 20 digs and Becca Brown (Collegeville, PA) recorded four of the team's nine service aces.

In the championship match, Perkins led the team with nine kills and nine digs. McCombs had seven kills, Gregory chipped in six kills, and Ferrer (Eastridge) passed out 25 assists.

Wrestling: 1-0, 4th place at Adrian Invitational

The wrestling team opened up the season with a 53-3 victory over Elmira and then place 4th out of 15 teams at the Adrian Invitational.

Jaden Hansen (Newburgh Free) started the evening with a late pin (6:40) at 125, Sean Peterson (Islip) earned a pin in 1:05 at 141, and Mike Galton (Warsaw) won a 19-3 tech fall decision at 174 to pace the victory over Elmira. 

Galton led the way at Adrian as he finished 2nd at 174 lbs. He started the day with a 5-1 win over Devin Miller (Heidelberg) in the 174 lb. bracket. He earned a 12-6 win over Eero Gross (Wabash) in the quarterfinals and won 6-2 over Derrick Top (Adrian) to advance to the finals. In the finals, he lost a tight 7-5 decision to Luke Silva (Aurora).

Dawsen Yates (Bolivar Richburg) was 3-2 and finished 4th at 133, Elijah Moshenek (Ringgold, VA) was 5-1 and finished 5th at 133, Sean Peterson (Islip) was 5-1 and tied for 5th at 141, Justin Smith (Marcus Whitman) was 4-1 and was 5th at 157, Cale Bartosch (Palmyra Macedon) was 2-2 and was 7th at 184, Blake Ilges (Canisteo Greenwood) was 4-2 and was 7th at 197, Justin Hoffman (Hadley-Luzerne) was 3-3 was 8th at 157, and Benjamin Rivera (Carmel) was 2-3 and was 8th at 165.
