Week in Review:

Men's Basketball: 1-2

The Pioneers opened up the season with a 92-87 victory over RIT but fell in both days of the Special Tee's Tournament, 80-67 to St. Lawrence and 124-80 to Ithaca.

Josh Reding (Spencerport) led the team with 40 points while Tavion Williams (Bronx/FDA) had a big week with 39 points and 20 rebounds. Basheem Wilkerson (Brooklyn/John Jay) scored 17 of his 29 points on the week in the win over RIT. Josh Romero (Bronx/Theodore Roosevelt) led the team with 11 assists.

Women's Basketball: 1-1

The women's basketball team split a pair of games as they opened up the 2021 season. They defeated SUNY Delhi 60-49 but fell 74-49 at Utica.

Emily Kelley (Andover) had a pair of double-doubles and finished with 31 points and 26 boards. Ivette Lewandowski (Springville Griffith) scored 31 points and grabbed 10 boards while Skylar Shaulis (Ovid/South Seneca) nine points and grabbed 15 rebounds in the win over Delhi.

Men's Cross Country: 22nd place at NCAA Niagara Regional

The men's cross country team wrapped up the 2021 season by competing at the NCAA Division III Niagara Regional hosted at the National Warplane Museum in Geneseo. The Pioneers finished 22nd overall.

Gavin Bathgate (East Rochester) was the top finisher for ASC. He finished the 8k course in 28:25.1 to earn 99th. Ryan Weir (Schertz, TX) was 130th (30:18.9), Andrew Hvisdak (Hamburg) was 141st (30:58.7), Aiden Bonomo (Manalapan, NJ) was 149th (32:45.3), and Jeff Jijy (New Hyde Park) rounded out the Pioneer top five in 154th (36:05.6).

Women's Cross Country: 20th place in NCAA Niagara Regional

The women's cross country team wrapped up the 2021 season with a 20th place finish at the 2021 NCAA Division III Niagara Regionals.

Sarah Rivet (Shenendehowa) and Laura Ferris (Victor/Mercy) led the Pioneers on the 6k course at the National Warplane Museum in Geneseo. Rivet was 123rd (29:37.6) while Ferris was 124th (29:38.4). Katie Watkins (Addison) was 131st (30:31.4), Summer Kier (East Rochester) was 139th (32:57.7) and Mattison Buckley (Wellsville) finished 141st (33:45.6).

Football: 6-4, 5-1 ECFC

Alfred State used a big 2nd half to defeat Dean College 37-15 and clinch a tie for the ECFC crown. The Pioneers have qualified for the New England Bowl and will travel to UMass Dartmouth on Saturday.

Dean took the early lead but the Pioneers scored the next ten points. Dawson Fontaine (Bensalem, PA) hit a 26-yard field goal and Aaron Jenkins (Canfield, OH) connected with Roman Napoleon (Allegany Limestone) on a 73-yard pass play. Four plays later, the Bulldogs retook the lead and held a 12-10 advantage at the half.

Jenkins scored from two-yards out on the Pioneers second drive of the 2nd half to make it 17-12. Dean kicked a field goal to cut into the lead but never would get any closer. Jenkins rushed in from one-yard out with 12:20 left in the game, he connected with Napoleon on a 28-yard score 32 seconds later after Fontaine's on-side kick was recovered, and Dylan Banks (Baldwinsville) capped the scoring with a 9-yard run with 2:20 left in the game.

Jenkins continued his magical season with another huge game. He rushed 28 times for 185 yards and two scores and was 11 for 28 for 270 yards and two scores. Napoleon had a big day catching six passes for 194 yards and two scores.

Jeremiah Nixon (Staten Island/Curtis), Brock Weist (Harpursville), and Nuhsar Mike (Syracuse/Leadership Academy) all had five tackles while Joel Smith had four tackles and 2.5 sacks. Anthony Allen (Staten Island/New Dorp) intercepted a pass.

Swimming & Diving: Men 4-0 & Women 4-1

The Pioneers scheduled meet at Penn State Altoona was postponed. The team will head to the Oberlin Invitational this week for a three-day championship style meet.

Volleyball: 18-4

Alfred State hosted the ECAC Championships this weekend. The Pioneers took the first set over top seed and eventual champion Kean University but the Cougars rallied for the 17-25, 25-19, 25-15, 25-20 victory.

Kiara Perkins (Coudersport, PA) capped her solid career with 15 kills and 10 digs. For her effort she was named to the all-tournament team. Karleigh Haines (Jamestown) finished with 14 kills and six digs while Nayomie Ferrer (Eastridge) finished with 38 assists, 17 digs, and five service aces. Emma Petrichick (Genesee Valley) finished with 17 digs.

Wrestling: 4-2

The Alfred State wrestling team won three matches at the Electric City Duals on Sunday afternoon. The Pioneers finished 3-2 on the day. They defeated Lackawanna 42-15, Keystone 32-16, and Scranton B 45-3 and fell 26-15 to Oneonta and 24-19 to Scranton.

Justin Smith (Marcus Whitman) finished the day 4-0 with two pins while Sean Peterson (Islip), Mike Galton (Warsaw), Blake Ilges (Canisteo Greenwood), and Dawson Yates (Bolivar Richburg) were all 4-1. Sean Malenfant (Averill Park) was 3-1 with three pins, Ryan Nugent (Newfane) was 2-0 with two pins, and Jaden Hansen (Newburgh Free) was 2-1.

The highlight of the day was Yates earned a victory over the #2 ranked wrestler in the Mideast Region.
